Hello everyone.  I had a doctor visit this morning. My primary care doc says i really need to loose weight. My blood sugar was high and he wants me back in 2 months to check it better.  Says i need to be checked for diabties. I got married last week end and got on my wifes insurance (UNited Health of Ohio) has a written exclusion. Anyway to fight this? I had to get a MRI done yesterday. Possiable herniated disk in my lower back. All my issues go back to lose weight or else. John

Hi John - congrats on your marriage!  Written exclusions are usually created by the policy holder (ie: your wife's employer).  United Healthcare does not exclude weight loss surgery unless their client specifically asks them to do so. I have several friends on UHC who have had surgery and gotten approval pretty easily.  Your best be is probably to appeal to the benefits department where she works and see if they every make exceptions.  If you do a cost analysis of long term care for your weight related health issues, vs. the cost of surgery, you might be able to make a very compelling case for the surgery.  Best wishes for good health!
