Arthritis & Gout

Had surgery 4/10 and had to go off all anti-inflammatories used to treat both Gout and osteo-arthritis Since then my gout has progressed to the point it is extremely painful. I keep myself well hydrated and do not want to take n-saids if there is any other solution since they can cause ulcers. Any one have the same problem? If so have you found a way to treat it successfully?

Sorry you're going through this, no real words of wisdom here, you might want to google it and go from there

Doug, Again thanks! I found a forum for those who have arthritis and have had bariatric surgery. It's been a great help, I found that there is a great variance in the attitude of surgeons about the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. While all are cautious some seem to be more willing to use them if you also take Prevacid or some other drug that minimizes potential for ulcers to occur. Barney

I don't have any words of wisdom either. There used to be one non-aspirin anit-inflammatory, but I can;t remember what is was or if it's still around. Make sure you talk to your docs. Good Luck Sharyn PS - Happy One Month

Sharyn, Thanks for noticing it was a one month anniversary for me. I have lost 50 pounds and am starting to feel better. As I told Doug I found a forum for those with arthritis that had the surgery and they mentioned their doctors prescribed vicodin for pain and colchicine for the gout. I called my doctor and he OK'ed those two and I feel much better. I see my Surgeon this Thursday and hopefully we can work out a program that I can stay on for an extended period. Barney

Hi Bernard. I take Allopurinol. Its for gout. I took it the morning of my surgery and still take it (5 weeks post surgery.) The doctor said you can't take it? Mine prescribed it and my surgeon ok'd it also. Judy

Judy, Thanks for your post. My doctor mentioned Allopurinol and I probably should have started taking that earlier, since my gout was acting up they wanted to use drugs to address the flare up. It may be that Allopurinol becomes part of a long term treatment for gout. I am glad you shared your experience so I know others have found a way to address this issue with success. Barney
