Nausea & Burning

I had my surgery 4/10. I have seen daily improvement with the exception of a 4 day period when I did not drink enough fluids and became dehydrated. I did not understand how important proper hydration was and since that incident I have made sure I drink at least 80-90 oz of fluid a day. Starting last night I have not been able to keep anything down. Even water causes a burning sensation in my stomach and comes right back up. Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions

It's probably time to call your surgeon, as you may have an ulcer, or possibly a stricture. I would bet on ulcer, due to the burning. *disclaimer* I am not your Doctor, nutritionist, or psychologist, in fact, I don't claim to know very much. However, I am almost a graduate of the school of hard knocks.

Doug, Thanks for the thought. This was my thought also, since I posted the notice it was suggested that I try something other then water. I tried drinking Fruit2O and lo and behold I could keep it down. I am drinking it slowly and I hope it will continue to stay down. If not I am going to call my surgeon on the weekend. Again thanks for your suggestion. And a belated thanks for the response you provided to my post earlier in April Barney

Hey Barney - I rarely drink plain water. It's always flavored, Propel, or I add Water Sensations to my water. Plain water makes me burp

Sharyn, Your note was reassuring. I may have seen a post you made on another site which said essential what your post to me said. Based on that I have stopped drinking water altogether and have switched to Crystal Light and flavored waters. The problems have diminished and I feel that I am going in a better direction Thanks for your post. Barney

Congratulations on your surgery! It is not unusual for WLS patients to experience nausea and burning with plain water. We are not certain why this happens. I see it more often in Gastric Bypass patients, particularly the younger patients. I think it is becuase the pasrt of the intestine that is brought up to the new stomach puch is not accustomed to getting plain water, prior to the surgery it always received fluids mixed with other things, especially elctrolytes, the palin water, dilutes the tissue and makes it hurt.  I always recommed to patients to drink their fluids as watered down, gatorade, powerade, crystal light, tea or other fluids that have electrolytes in them. This usually takes care of the problem. Another issue may be drinking fluids to quickly or in too much volume. Slow down, remeber to sip you rfluids through out the day. Forgetting to drink and then trying to paly cathc up will make you sick, nauseous and throw up. If you ever experience non-stop vomitting with fluids, contact your surgeon immeidately, do not wait, you can become easily dehydrated. Good luck and good health!
