I have a high bmi, over 65. Someone told me that the lap band was not for people my size, that the rny would be better. Is this true? Also, would any of you know if medicaid covers the lap band? Thanks!

I think that it depends on the surgeon. Some won't do the band if your BMI is over 50, but some seem to do it on all sizes. You would have to talk to the surgeon about that. Good luck.

Hi Bobbie My BMI was 55 and Dr. C did my lap band. I am 17-months out and have lost 115 pounds. I have 80 to 100 plus to go depending on how I feel when the 80 more comes off lol. good Luck Wings

If your BMI is that high DO NOT do lap band. biggest mistake of my life. had both, surgeon for the second one said a lap band was wrong for me with a higher BMI. Basically, lap band and RNY are tools, to be coupled with diet and exercise. How much of the formula differs by each. You need to discuss your habits, trends, [ersonality and goals with your doc to determine what is right for you. for me, I discovered that the following sounds right: lap band total wt loss= 1/3 lap band, 2/3 diet and exercise other surgeries with malabsorpton componetn (differs by type) total wt loss= 1/2 to 2/3 surgery, 1/3 to 1/2 diet and exercise I think this holds true for the initial wt loss period but likely changes as long term wt loss depends largely on diet and exerciese. medicaid and medicare is getting picky about the surgery and you will likely be limited to a "center for excellence" if you hope for them to cover it. be prepared for a long wait and much paperwork, its the system.
