I'm sure you all aware that the OSU Medical Center has 2 support meetings per month...the first wednesday of each month for early-post op, and the 4th wednesday of the month for those 6 months or more post op. I think anyone is welcome at either one, but they concentrate more on those time frames. Anyway, its been a while since they updated their page but I just checked and the dates/topics have been posted and I thought I'd share them. If the weather is decent, I'm going to try to go to one or the other each month! Here are the dates and the topics: December 6: Recipe Exchange/Holiday Party -- EVERYONE WELCOME! Join Shirley Kindrick, PhD, RD, LD to celebrate the holidays with a recipe exchange. She will be teaching you how to modify some popular recipes and giving you each a collection of favorite recipes provided by each of you. Low fat, low sugar refreshments will be served. January 3: Carbohydrates Nancy Weese, MS, RD, LD will lead a discussion on carbohydrate intake following gastric bypass surgery including how to choose healthy carbohydrate selections and avoid dumping syndrome. February 7: Protein Supplementation Kris Fout, MS, RD, LD will lead a discussion about the importance of protein metabolically and how to choose protein supplements (hydrolysate, concentrate, isolate) after weight loss surgery. March 7: Vitamins/Minerals Shirley Kindrick, PhD, RD, LD will lead a group discussion about the importance of vitamins and minerals in your diet after surgery. Late Post-Operative Support Group This group, which meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month, is dedicated to the needs of those who have had surgery more than six months ago. To better meet the needs of these patients, we are changing the format of this group to a true support group. A support group is when a group of people all sharing a certain problem or concern meet to discuss how they are dealing with it. Support groups provide emotional support by decreasing a person's sense of isolation and can also provide practical advice, since other members of the group have experience confronting similar challenges. At greater than 6 months from surgery, patients are beginning to face issues concerning "maintaining" their weight loss, keeping up momentum for further weight loss, and/or relationships changing in relation to their new lifestyle. Dr. Douglas Kramer, PsyD, will facilitate these groups. The following topics will be discussed, however, all issues and problems are open for discussion at every meeting. The dates and topics for these sessions are as follows: November 29: Co-Dependency ( **Please note date change due to Thanksgiving holiday) December 27: Substitute Addictions January 24: Dr. Bradley Needleman Dr. Bradley Needleman, medical director of the Bariatric Surgery Program, will be here in a question and answer forum. Everyone is welcome to attend. February 28: Open Discussion with Dr. Douglas Kramer March 28: Open Discussion with Dr. Douglas Kramer
