hi there, i'm studying for my RN. We are in the endocrine system and talking about pancreatistis. this got me thinking... (no snow i hope will come of the great thinking!! he he) if you have the R-N-Y can you still get pancreatisits?? i know we are bypassed to below, but what i'm thinking about if you can block any of the ducts that lead out to the small bowel and cause back flow of the enzymes, can this happen to the RNY pt's at the junction of bypass and back all the way up to any of the ducts???? thanks for your help. jennifer future millionaire in nursing, yea right!!! don't know what i was thinking, just kidding, love taking care of people!!!!

You can get pancreatitis after a RNY, no different than any other patient. A blockage at the Y would not likely cause pancreatitis, because there is a one way valve where the duct empties into the small intestine so stuff get get into the intestine, but not back up into the duct. Dr. C
