Just starting out here
Hello I am just starting my Journey with WLS, I got the approvel from my Ins and start my 12 wks of diet counseling this week. It will be at least feb before I will have my surgery. I do have supportived family and friends, but I am still scared of all the "un knowns" I am from the cambridge area and would like very much to know it there are any people on this site from this area. I do have a couple of people that I work with that have had the surgery already one only 3 mo out, she is a great person. I will be having my surgery at OSU hoping to get Dr. Neddleman, they say he is wonderful. I weight right now 225 lbs and I am 5'1 my BMI is 42.5 I belive, I am hoping that my journey goes smooth, I guess I am afraid of the post-op pain, I don't do pain very well anymore. I just had my 2nd heart cath done 3 weeks ago, blockages still the same I did get a heart stent on my 1st one in my LAD, and was having some cp thats why they did my 2nd one, but my PCP belives that this surgery will help out alot with my health problems I suffer from high BP high Chol, and boarder line sugar and high trigs.
I want the surgery to feel healthy, to have a better quality of life for my self. I am only 42 and would like a chance at life before it all passes to soon. I would love to be able to move around without all this joint pain in my legs and back, and play with my grandchildren without being SOB from all the weight, I have absorbed alot on here and would like to know it others have ever had any of these fears. Any advise on using my new tool for succes will be great. Like I said I am just starting this Journey and could use all the advise I can get on making it a succes for me.
Jan,
I'm not gonna sugar coat it or lie to you. There is alot of pain involved but it is easily controlled by pain meds, I had open RNY so I was cut breast bone to about an inch above the belly button. The pain for me only bothered me for about 6-8 days and it was gone, but for that pain all I took was tylenol and that was'nt very often. But after the the first 10 days everything starts to ease. I'm 5 months out and down 102lbs and don't regret it one bit I would do it all over again if faced with the same decision.
Good luck in your journey please feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.
Jim
Hi Jan,
Welcome to OH. We sound a lot alike. I am going through OSU Bariatrics, I am 57 yrs. old and weigh 222 and am 5'1". I have HBP, HChol and am border line sugar. I also have a lot of arthritis and asthma. I started my 12 diet program 3 weeks ago.
My husband is diabetic and has had numerous heart caths. He said they are very painful.
It looks like I'm not having my surgery untill late January or February too. We may even be roommates.
Lets keep in touch.
Peggy
Jan,
Welcome! It's nice to 'meet' you. Hang in there, February will be here sooner than you think!
Which surgery are you having? I am assuming RNY? I don't have any personal experience with RNY, but I know you'll get alot of support here. I'm also 42 and life improved very quickly for me after my DS. I have more energy, feel better, look better - you name it! I wish the same for you!
My DH had the DS 7/10/06 with a BMI of 43. His BP is now 120/70, cholesteral went from 248 to 129, triglycerides from 346 to 79, no more sleep apnea, no more back pain and he lost 90 lbs already! (but guys lose soooo fast!) His new BMI - 32!
There are lots of success stories here, and soon you will be one, too!!
Kim
Thank you all very much for your responces, I needed a lift. I work in an ER dept as a Er tech/ unit sec and today was not a good day.( Some terrible things today for people in the ER) I see people all the time that are overweight and serious health issues and I keep telling myself I don't want to be "that" person one day.At 42 I am wanting to have a better quality of life from here out and already having 2 Heart Caths done is not the route I want to take.My Doctor has been telling me for the past 10 yrs that my weight is what is causing alot of my health issues, but it seems that I could never lose much or keep it off. I am also 3 wks away from my Quit smoking date, I am doing this for my health also and cause it cost to damn much any more and I know it will be a benfit for my surgery too. and my daughter is expecting her 2nd child on Nov 29th (if not before) so as you can tell I have alot of things going on right now and It is very refreshing to know that there are people out there that I can talk to and relate too on these issues.I would be lying if I said I was not scared of the surgery, I am well aware of the risks that any surgery involves, But I I know I need to do this,as it seems I can not seem to control my weight any longer on my own.I am tired of having the health issues I already have due to my weight and then all the joint aches to boot,(Iwork on my feet alot, and have terrible leg, knee and foot pain) and I know alot of it comes from weighing to much, to much weight on my frame, but above all I want to FEEL and LOOK healthy!! and have some energy back, I lack that so much it seem, I am always tired now a days. so thank you all once again I am sure over the next few months I will have alot of questions and fears but it is a comfort to know that others know EXACTLY what I am going through.
Thank You
