Decided on Dr. Curry!
Thank you for your responses to my question about Ohio surgeons!! I had my seminar in Dayton today and was dismayed to find that the 2 surgeons had only performed 30-40 lapbands COMBINED, between the 2 of them!! Everyone has recommended Dr. Curry and I think I am in agreement. I had hoped for someone closer, b/c I am in Troy (about 20 min. north of Dayton), but everyone swears by Dr. C and after reviewing his profile, and the hospital that he uses, I am impressed. I also like the fact that he is a member of this website and even posts on the board to his patients. Most drs. won't talk to you out of the office! I am going to call tomorrow for an apt. and hope I can get in to meet him soon! Do you know if I will be required to attend one of his seminars b4 I can see him? I just went to one and they didn't tell me ANYTHING I didn't already know, as I have been researching day and night, for a while now. I would like to hurry up and meet with him and try to get the ins. approval and my testing done to see if I will even be able to have the surgery! I MIGHT have an ulcer, and I know that will make the surgery a definite NO. Anyway, just wondered what his policy was, the others I've called required a seminar first. I am canceling my apt. with the Dayton surgeon, due to the lack of their lapband experience. I would rather go with Dr. C's expertise, even despite the distance. Well, I'm excited and anxious to meet him and get the ball rolling, so wish me luck!!!!!
I also had Dr C as my surgeon and you can't ask more for a more caring and compassionate surgeon. Every single time that I have ever called his office or emailed him, he answers right away. I went with my cousin to one of Dr C's seminars yesterday and my aunt and uncle were very impressed. My uncle was especially impressed that Dr C remembered my name! He said he has had the same doctor for 40 years and still has to tell him who he is. I am definintely one of Dr C's biggest fans! You've made a wise choice in deciding him to be your surgeon. Best of Luck and much success!

May I ask which doctors you are talking about? I thought I had made my decision on a doctor and was planning to have surgery in Dayton. Since being on this board and hearing so many good things about Dr. Curry, I'm seriously re-thinking my choice. Plus, like you, I'm impressed that he reads and answers the messages posted here. Living in Oxford, I'm not sure the distance to Dayton or Cincinnati will make much difference, I'm almost halfway between both cities.
Just curious,

HI!! The doctors I am referring to are the ones at Dayton Bariatric. I went to a seminar Wed. night and asked Dr. Clarry how many she and Dr. Siddiqui had performed and she said 30-40 lapbands, although 1000's of bypasses. I asked her if that was 30-40 each, or combined, and she said combined and I was just like oh, ok, thanks, have a good day lol (That's like 15-20 apiece, and Dr. C has done 200-250!!). I almost blurted out right there in the siminar, holy cow, but Dr. Curry in Cincinnatti has done over 200! I'm sure they would have appreciated that!! lol SO I have an appt. Tues. morning with Dr. C even though he's farther away, but with his reputation I believe it will be worth it. I just hope he can do it, because I fear that my ulcer has come back/flared up. Good luck, let me know what you decide to do, too - were you going with the same doctors that I was in Dayton? Well, good luck!!

I don't blame you for choosing Dr. Curry - 30 to 40 lapbands total for two doctors isn't very many. No, those weren't any of the doctors I've been considering. Still am trying to decide what type surgery I want and who I want to go to. I had originally planned on lap RNY and going to Dr. Maguire. A friend of mine went to him and after a year has lost 115, is doing very well and speaks highly of him. I just started looking into lapband and am liking what I read. Like the doctors you saw, I don't think Dr. Maguire (he's done hundreds of RNYs) and his staff have done many lapbands. Should I decide and am able to go the lapbound route, will definitely choose Dr. Curry. With so many glowing recommendations on the forum, how could I not. Either way, I won't be able to have surgery until early next year, at least, so have time to think about it. I missed a lot of work this year due to the illness and passing of my mother, so have to build up some personal time.
I did discuss WLS with my PCP and was happy to discover that he is all for it and behind me 100%! This will make it easier for me, and he is going to write a letter for my insurance co. So at least I can mark off one step on my journey toward better health.
Good luck and let us know how everything goes with Dr. Curry on Tuesday.
