?? for dr. curry or anyone else that can help
first of please let me thank dr curry or anyone else who may reply to this posting. before i had WLS- i suffered from chronic abdominal pain with nausea and on a rare occasion vommiting. i've been admitted several times for this problem and the only thing they could find was that the bile my body produces (already had gall bladder removed) was "backing" up into my small intestine and stomach. after numerous visits to a pain specialist, i decided that maybe i would be addicted to narcotics and sought out advice from a hospital in cleveland to have WLS. they turned me down, based on the fact they were afraid that i wouldn't be able to keep anything down after surgery. so i went to the "big guns" and went to the cleveland clinic. there i was diagnosied with gastroperisis. some medications help but not toatlly. i next went to a general surgeon in hopes that he could fix what was wrong with me and solve the back up. it was the clinic that highly suggested that i re-consider WLS as that would "cure" my problem. so i did and started through their process, which i never made it back to the surgeon's office before i gave up, because even though i had insurance- it still cost a pretty penny for my co-pays. then i heard about the trim for life program in stuebenville. i seen the doctor and transfered my records and in about 5-6 months i was approved. i had the surgery may 2004. i lost 170#'s- gaid back about 50#'s partly due to use of prednisone for my asthama that started flaring up again. and in the last 6months- i've started having the same symptoms as before WLS. i'm so nauseated, i have abdominal pain mostly at a tolerable level. i had a Upper GI with Small Bowel Follow through- showed a hiatel hernia- but no strictures or obstructions or leaks. the doc wanted to do a EGD but was unable to since the endoscopy lab couldn't get an IV in me. the doc said he would still do it if i wanted-but i would have to go back and have a PICC line put in- go home and come back the next day- have the test and then they would pull the line. well- i got to thinking the pros and con of continuing to have the scope-- but decided the risk of having the picc line put in- left in just over night and removed after a 15-20 minute procedure outweighed each other.
sorry- i'm lengthy. basically what really is the biggest problem is the nausea- because i'm not a vommit type person in the first place. i've only dumped 2 times and that was right after surgery- because my body didn't know what was going on when i advanced to different levels of foods.
so i'm up to taking 50 mg of prednisone and sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. my life is going through a stressful time and i'm wondering if the stress is causing thies problems or do i have gastropersis again. or is it from the 50#'s (started loosing some again-- about 10 of the 50)
dr curry (if your still reading, lol) can gasteropersis occur again after RNY?? i used to take a med for this but it was pulled from the shelfs. can't think of the drug right now. do you and anyone else have any suggestions???? help me please-- jennifer (newlywed) from akron!!!!!
Jennifer,
I doubt the RNY cured your gastroparesis, I'm sure their theory was that no more food would be going through the stomach so the gastroparesis wouldn't cause any more problems. Unfortunately a case like yours is so complex there is no way I can render any reasonable opinion over the net. I would say go back to the Cleveland Clinic if you can.
Dr. C
i know thats its hard to give out good advice because the way people are frequently finding fault with doctors, hospitals, and nurses. i really appreciate the little help you gave. the bypass surgery did a UGI with SBFT. they said the pouch looks good and the emptying time was good too. next he tried to do a EGD- but they couldn't get that darn heplock in. then the doctor suggested getting a picc placed on monday and come back on tuesday and have the procedure but he said that he highly doubted that he would find a cause for the nausea. i thought about on the way home and my husband and i talked about it. we both aggreed that while yes we want to get to the bottom of this i also don't want a foreign objest in me that was only going to be used 15-20 minutes long and then they would remove it. but again---- thanks dr. C.
