Pre-op requirements????
I posted this to the main forum board, so if you've already answered, thank you!! I am thinking maybe some of Dr. Mikami's patients can confirm their pre-op diet here....so anyway...here's my sitch...
I am reading these boards more and more as my surgery gets closer and I'm nervous about some of the things talked about...I don't have a pre-op diet of any kind...my paperwork simply says low-fat something or other the night before, and nothing after midnight....you guys are talking bowel preps, and fleet enemas...and I'm wondering if I've missed something or if its just a surgeons preference and mine doesn't do any preop...
ok...I suppose I better call in the morning and ask if I'm supposed ot be doing anything special...I'm still seeing my nut, and keeping food records, so...wouldn't she know if I am supposed ot be on liquid, or something??
anyone else have virtually no "pre-op diet"?
your Dr. doesn't require it, neith did my Dr. Dr Needleman. He told me that it was his job to get around inside and he couldn't justify the cost of a liquid diet pre op. I did eat very light the day before and nothing after 5pm but that was my choice. You've got a great Dr. there. I didn't do a bowel prep either. What day is surgery? Good Luck!

Hi Princess,
Dr. Mikami does not require any bowel prep or special pre op diet, just light the day before surgery and nothing after midnight. You have the instructions correct. I am like you, amased at all the different pre op diets, bowel preps, liquid for 2 weeks, etc. Some of which sounds really crazy but each to their own. I am 9 months out and down 120 lbs with 30 more to go. I have had virtually NO problems but on the other hand, I have tried to do exactly what the doctor & nut have told me to do. I still journal my food & exercise everyday. I have only had a very few minor incidences and those have all been my own fault for doing things I wasn't supposed to do. For instance one time my pork was very dry and I had a problem with that. Another early problem was with "steamed" veggies, those are a BIG no no for early post op. I recently ate a little chinese and then ate a whole egg roll. I don't think it was the food as much as it was the amount. If I had stopped at half the egg roll I think I would have been OK, but I didn't stop and I wasn't OK for several hours.
Good luck next Tuesday. Please keep us posted.
No
thanks for the reassurance!! I appreciate it...
I'm kind of torn between calling and asking and NOT calling...you know, I'm sure you're right (meaning I didn't miss it during the consult), but I am so afraid I'll show up next week and they'll say "didn't you...?" and cancel the whole spiel....on the other hand, i might call and they'll say something like since you asked - yea...do a bowel prep...lol....
of all the silly things to be thinking about a week before surgery...oy.
I had my surgery in May with Dr Mikami.. I asked him about any needed bowell prep and he said that this surgery will deal with the upper part of the intestines not the lower so a bowel prep is not needed. They are very goood and will give you all the info you need on what and when to eat. Like many others, I ate a very light diet a day or two prior to surgery, but, that was my choice. Dr Mikami and his staff are the best and I know you will do great. I will be praying for you..........diane
Peggy - I wanted to wish you well on your journey. OSU has a great reputation, and whichever surgeon you pick (or gets picked for you) will be wonderful I'm sure. I picked Dr. Mikami on this...."Who is the better surgeon?" they said "they (Mikami and Needleman) are both equally competent surgeons", and I said "who can I get an appointment with soonest?" They replied "Dr. Mikami" I answered "Dr. Mikami it is". I am confident enough in OSU's rep, that it really didn't matter to me. I trust both equally. I haven't met Dr. Needleman, but Dr. Mikami was very nice at our appointment - understanding with my nerves, patient with my questions. Thanks for the good wishes, I'll take 'em!!
Diane - thanks for the info. I am crazy busy at work trying to get stuff done before I'm off, and didn't get around to calling...its good to be reassured by all the great folks here at OH. My days are getting shorter, and I am getting more and more ready for this! BTW - how are you doing since May?? Lost a ton? Feeling sweel?? Running laps around the slowpokes??
Thanks everyone!!
