Barix Clinic in Groveport vs. Dr. Curry
Hi,
I have scheduled a consult with Barix Clinic in mid-Sept. I will be self-pay, so I am assuming that things will (hopefully) move fairly quickly. I keep seeing so many great things about Dr. Curry and was wondering if anyone could provide any insight into his practice vs. Barix Clinics. I have noticed quite a few people in the central Ohio area who opted for Dr. Curry. I am certainly open to scheduling a consult with Dr. Curry, but obviously Cincinnati isn't quite as convenient as I live in Cols. area. Thanks much.
Hi Judy, your thought there is a good one...obviously you are questioning it yourself so why not make the trip to both centers? I was with Dr. Curry yesterday, his nurse practioner Lisa (I have been friends with her since before she started with him) his RD Erin who also had the lapband...
I know nothing about Barix except what I have heard from other surgeons around the tristate area...I can't and won't put down a center I know nothing about..But I do know when you choose a surgeon who runs his own office and has tons of input into running his own program, you are going to get the best of care.
Now mind you, I am not a patient of Dr. Curry's, I had my surgery elsewhere..so I am not here to advocate for him but rather help you find your own answer. It's my opinion as a "patient" advocate, (trained by bariatric surgeons,) you must feel comfortable with the program, it's a very personal decision...you should feel that program fit like a glove..Once the procedure is done, the surgeon and the center become very much a part of your life. It's nearly impossible for someone else to make this decision for you as it's such an individual personal one, just like coloring your hair..wearing glasses vs contacts..wearing certain jewelry or clothing..this must fit your lifestyle...Choose wisely and educate yourself,.
I know several of Dr. Curry's patients and I do know he is well liked and well respected..extremely laid back and very open and available to his patients....
When you attend the seminar at Barix ask questions about the surgeons..how much training did they receive? how many open vs laparoscopic procedures do they do? Not all bariatric surgeons are trained in laparoscopic procedures so it's important to know their ratio...I suggest you do the same with Dr. Curry,....It often amazes me that "we" (yes even me at one time) would test drive several cars or look at many different houses before purchasing...yet we would not go to that much trouble to search for the right doctor..I have learned so much since my surgery in 2003...
If you want, I will even meet you at Dr. Curry's office, I don't have a problem asking him questions..LOL
Email me if I can answer any of your questions, if I don't know the answer I will find it!!

Hello Judy!
When I started this process last December I checked out the Wish Center near Dayton, Barix in Columbus and the Deaconess Weight Loss Center (Dr. Curry).
One thing I noticed at Barix was that if you developed a serious complication .... you got shipped to one of the Columbus hospitals. I don't know about you but if I am crashing and in serious trouble I do not want to have to wait to be transferred. Nor do I want to incurr the expense of an ambulance if I need it.
I went to the seminar and it was very informative and the staff seemed very nice. The hospital looked spotless and obviously catered to the large person with the furniture.
The Wish Center in Dayton explained to me that sometimes they have the surgeons flown in to help but mostly they have one main surgeon on staff, Dr Schofield. They are affiliated with Middletown Regional Medical Center. I was concerned about the experience of the staff so I did not even attend the seminar.
When I went to the Deaconess seminar Dr.Curry did the presentation. You got to meet the staff after the presentation. I finally decided to go with Dr. Curry because of the patient satisfaction that was expressed by other members of this board and when I attended the seminar the staff just raved about him too.
I had my consult in January and had to do the six month diet requirement for Cigna. During that time Dr. Curry opened a private office and most of the staff moved to that office. He is still is at the Deaconess Weight Loss Center and they have hired new staff. Today I had my pre-op eval. at the Deaconess Weight Loss Center with Dr. Curry and the new staff. I liked the new staff as much as I liked the old staff. I was very impressed with the dietician.
One thing about Dr. Curry is that he is always accessible. You can email him and he sends you the answer almost immediately. If you have a problem...he gets right on it and tells you what to do or makes arrangements to get you in the office. He even helps patients who did not have their surgery done by him and cannot get the help they need after their surgery.
Yes...It was a 2 hour drive for me with construction today. But they had it arranged for me to do my doctor appt., nutritionist appt for diet teaching prior to surgery, pre-op testing and anesthesia evaluation all in one day. That was very timely and helpful.
If you are thinking of Dr. Curry you might call his new office...it is across the street from Deaconess Hospital. They can give you self-pay information and you can compare it with Barix.
You can also call Deaconess for their prices . I do not know if there is a difference in prices by going to his private office vs the Deaconess Weight Loss Center.
I just don't think you can go wrong by choosing Dr. Curry.

Hi Judy:
I went to the Barix Clinic in Groveport for my RNY surgery. Dr James Viglianco did my surgery, and you could not ask for a nicer, more compassionate doctor. The Barix Clinic is a really beautiful clinic, and everything is for the larger person. The rooms are really big, airy, and light, and all of the staff is extremely nice. I love every one of the nurses there, and the receptionist Eileen. Everyone there is so supportive and nice. I have had complications, and am going to the Cleveland Clinic for a revision, but after I am released from Cleveland, I will continue my post-op care with Dr Vig. He gives me a hug every time I go for an appointment, and he is working with the Cleveland Clinic surgeon to make me better.
I have asked Dr Curry questions on this site, and he has always answered me promptly and helpfully. I live in Chillicothe, so Columbus was a better choice for me...and I did not know about Dr Curry until after my surgery.\
I hope this helps you...of course, it is your choice. Best of luck to you!!!!
