Dr C patients...question
HOw did you choose which surgery to have? I'm really struggling right now with the decision. Up until this point, I thought lap-band would be best, now I'm thinking RNY. Has anyone had complications? My sister had alot of complications with RNY, but she didn't have Dr Curry for a surgeon. My other sister had the lap-band with Dr Curry and is doing great. I know why people choose the lap band. So, if you had RNY, what made you choose that surgery?
Thanks for any and all input!!
Tina
Tina,
I agree with Michael: no one can make that decision for you, but I can share my experience.
IT HAS BEEN GREAT!
I had my surgery on Monday morning and went home Wednesday afternoon. I have had no complications, although I do have the chicken curse. Can't eat it; it makes an encore appearance every time I try (last night for example). Learning to eat has been a valuable experience. Sometimes I still get a little too enthusiastic but am quickly reminded of "Limitations."
If you want any more specifics, e-mail me.
Oh, by the way, my surgeon is fantastic!
-137 lbs. since 12/05/05.
I started at 347.5 and had LAPBAND on 3/6/2006. I am now down 50 lbs (and minus 1 gallbladder 6 wks into the process). I personally couldn't mentally handle the thought of RNY--but I am thankful that it has worked for some. The LAPBAND has been perfect for me. I don't regret it for one moment. I had had a couple bumps in the road-a port infection that is giving me fits and the gall bladder, but I feel markedly better than I did 5 months ago and I actually have HOPE!.
Whichever surgery is best for you, that is for you and Dr. C to decide. Dr. C is a great, caring doctor. You can trust his advice.

Hi Tina
I thought about the lapBand, but choose the RNY for 2 reasons. 1st, for my BMI, the data was better for the RNY. And 2nd, my knees and back were giving me A LOT of trouble and I needed fast relief.
But, no one can make this decision for you, but I know Dr C can give you all of the stats. Good luck!!

Tina,
I am 2 weeks out and I had the lap RNY, and I also went back and forth between the
two of them. I just kept talking to more and more people on the board, and this
is how I persobally chose. I can honestly tell you, Dr. Curry is your best resource
he can give you the pros and cons, and all of info you can read. Just stay with this
Dr., he is awesome and thats the first step, if you Dr. is good, everything else is
bound to follw. If you would like to email, please do. Linda Bell
I chose the RNY because I needed to lose 200 pounds and at my age, constant pain in my feet and knees kept me from living a productive life. I was actually considering a disability retirement before I had my surgery. It is a very personal decision for anyone to make. My advice would be to do your research, consult your primary physician and schedule and appointment with Dr Curry. Good luck!
