I haven't seen anything about this...any insight would be great
Will coughing cause the band to slip? I have asthma and several other conditions where I cough vigorously on a daily basis. I'm HOPING this will help clear some of this up...but it also worries me.
Also, can banding affect negatively on a person with ulcerative colitis? It's in remission....but I'd rather it just stay there.
I am not having the lap band but i do remember when i went to my wls seminar that the dr said they put a few stitches in there to keep it in place (the band that is) but you may want to ask your dr, and i know how the "asthima" coughs go my daughter has asthima sorry to hear you have it. and my son has the ulserative colitis and when he has and attac they just put him on antiboitics so not sure about that either, i would just ask your dr just to be on the safe side
God bless you
Paula
Thank you Paula~! As my seminar date gets closer, I'm getting a bit nervous....but still WAY excited. I'm not supposed to have an appointment with my GP for two more months but I'm thinking one after the seminar is called for. He backed me for RNY, which I changed my mind about (thank goodness) so this band should be a walk in the park (HA~!) compared to that. If I get told NO at this point I think...well....I'll keep to myself that thought.
Bobbi it's true the band is stitched after being placed. There should be little slippage.esp if the surgeon knows what he is doing..
But I know nothing about Dr. Watkins other than what I see on the TV commercials..
check their faclility and staff out carefully..ask a lot of questions about the post op program..as post op care is just as important if not more important than the surgery itself. What is Dr. Watkins background and training, etc? all ligitimate questions.
Good luck
Brenda
Hi...I'd like to suggest you post also to the lap band forum here at obesityhelp - it's a very active and friendly board and I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses to your questions. You can find it by clicking the forums tab up top and then choose Lap Band from the Surgery Types Forums list. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Mia,
The band itself is not stitched, rather the stomach is stitched to itself to fold it up over the band and make "belt loops" to hold it in place. Even still, the rate of slippage is 1%. Patients with ulcerative colitis can usually be banded, but it's kind of a case-by-case basis.
Good luck,
Dr. C
