Well, lots of folks helped me and I thought I would leave my 2 cents worth!
To the hospital chapstick, robe, pillow to hold over your stomach on the ride home, reading material, ipod etc. Don't laugh I sent my husband home for a back scratcher after the first night in the hospital and one of the best things I had with me were earplugs! I always use them on airplanes they're the spongy ones you press to make smaller and when put in your ears they expand back out. I slept great!
I've had 4 back surgeries and learned this the hard way. Dedicated salad tongs make a great tissue extender for potty breaks. I always bought those kitchen scrubber things that have a handle on one end and the other has a ball of french fry looking yellow sponges on the other. This is GREAT for soaping up hard to reach areas. I also have one of those in shower handicapped chairs.
I would be lost without my magic bullet and tiny rubbermaid cups!
I'm 19 days post op and still learning. Good luck to all who will undergo.
