Protein Drinks??
Hello again everyone. Im not sure what I posted about last but I did switch surgeons and much much happier. My surgery date is now March 8th. Have one more test to complete (had to do everything all over again..uggh) on Feb.23rd. Actually its not a mandatory test, just one the cardioligist is requesting before he will give his ok. Anyway...was wondering if someone could give me some ideas for the protein drinks I will need after surgery. I would like to get some to try so that I can find one I like so I have it when I come home. I've read about some web sites but cant remember any names or anything. Once in particular..again dont know the name but....someone said they had a great variety sample pack. I would really appreciate any and all ideas. Thanks.........................Karen

HI!~
Here are all the sites *I* know of for ordering samples of protein.
I will say tastes CHANGE for many after WLS so if you find some now you like you MAY not like them postop....BUT I agree samples are the way to go! (*saves you money from buying a tub of something you can't/don't like to drink!) ''I'' don't think GNC has much that is tastey though....So ordering online seems to be best (for me)!
Powdered pre-digested whey concentrate, or isolate or a blend of the 2 protein are the kind/s that gastric bypassers can BEST absorb! and ar highly bioavailable. And so much better tasting and cheaper (70 servings in a 5# tub champion PW stack for $25.99 + 4.95 S&H = 44 cents a serving!!! (canned can be $1 ea or more!) than premade canned shakes, which sometimes are higher in carbs, fat and not always the protein we want ***(many canned are not predigested whey they are a less bioavailable and absorbable protein such as milk protein (aka calcium caseinate) or such!)***
Slimfast are 190 cal a can, 9 g fat, 6 g carbs, 20g protein and milk based
http://www.enutritionshop.com/product_detail.asp?T1=SLI+FC4549
Atkins are 180 cal a can, 18 g protein (milk based), 9 g fat, 5 g carbs, and are milk based also (but they do have soe whey in them)http://www.atkins.com/products/chocolate-delight-ready-to-drink-shake
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The nutritional info for shakes most recommend for wlsers use sit around these values:
1 scoop
23g protein
0-3g fat
0-3g carbs
90-120 calories
~~~~~~~~~
People recommend making them with WATER only (not milk, which adds 90-100 calories/12 g carbs and 8g protein *not the kind we can utilize well) , drink within 30 min also!

You can buy a magic bullet blender to make w/ ice, sugar free syrups,

or www.netrition.com (local in Albany NY S&H is $4.95 no matter ho wm=little/much you order! there 5# tubs of Champion PW stack is $25.99
http://www24.netrition.com/champion_whey_stack_page.html also if you find you like the chocolate, banana or strawberry (*I do not know of anyone who likes their vanilla!)
extracts, spices, 1 tsp powdered sf/ff pudding powder or 1 tsp sf jello powder etc...
www.walgreens.com has them $59 free S&H or www.buythebullet.com has BOGO free, I think Target and other stores have them too!

Karen,
I would try some samples at bariatriceating.com, they seem to be good and now I really only use one kind now. Its the Zero Carb Isopure choc drink. My taste did change some as Jamie said but not all that much as I thought it would Well try the samples that might be your best bet.
I wish you the best.. ~Hugs~

Just got to keep trying till you
find the one that works best for you.
MY favorite is a ready made ( im lazy)
ADVANT EDGE chocolate royale! just
grab from the fridge and drink up.
ITS like a glass of chocolate milk for me a treat.
I also do the carb countdown chocolate milk!
which is good too
just try and ur tastes will differ post op!
good luck
lisa
Thanks everyone for your help. Lisa where do you find the Advant edge? I looked around today but couldnt find it. I also looked at some slimfast stuff because Stacy had mentioned it, but everything I found had tons of carbs and sugars in it. I will go into some of these web sites and see what I come up with. Thanks again. I will keep you posted.
