Gums & Teeth hurt
Hi, I am almost 2 years out. I have lost 163lbs. I have been a model patient up until about August. In August I had to have my gall bladder taken out. Fine, my gall bladder wasnt 100% before I had WLS. So it wasnt something I thought about really being related with my surgery. For the past month I have had terrible pain in my mouth. At first I thought it was a tooth ache. A trip to the Dentist told me that my teeth were in perfect shape. Now I am off to a periodontist, maybe its my gums? I guess I will find out shortly.
So my question is... Has anyone else had problems with there mouth after surgery? I keep thinking it has something to do with the fact that I havent gotten enough protein lately, or that since we have to chew our food so carefully maybe I am having food stuck inbetween my teeth and I am not getting it out and it has given me an infection? I dont know.
Just wondering if anyone has had this problem.
I havent had gum problems but when my husband and I were on vacation, I cracked one of my teeth. I have NEVER had problems with my teeth and I think its the lack of calcium. so I make sure EVERY day I take my calcium suppliments. Now, of course, the cracked tooth could have nothing to do with my loss of calcium but I dont want to find out!!

I know gums can be affected sometimes by certain vitamin deficiencies. YOu might want to have your levels checked if you haven't in a while. I've had sudden gum soreness in the past (pre op) and was told by my dentist that we get little viruses that attack the gums sometimes. I'll bet its just something like that. Doesn't hurt to check, though. Good luck.

Gail,
I have heard that because of our malabsortion sometimes it can cause problems but I would think that if we take what we need every day it should be ok.. I know that I have 2 fillings that are taking a lot of wear because I am chewing so much more but I can not say that is because of the surgery, though it is a side effect.
I would have it checked out if it does not clear up in a couple of days. I know sometimes my gums get sore but I lightly brush the gums with Listorine(sp?) and it seems to help....
Take care

I know various vitamin (esp the B's) deficiency can cause mouth issues...

A deficiency of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) may result in bloodshot eyes, abnormal sensitivity to light, itching and burning of the eyes, inflammation in the mouth, a sore and burning tongue, and cracks on the lips and in the corners of the mouth.
Folic acid deficiency may cause poor growth, graying hair, inflammation of the tongue (glossitis), mouth ulcers,
How much CALCIUM CITRATE are you taking? I recommend AT BARE MINIMUM 1,000mg, I prsonally take 2,000mg day spread out 500mg doses...we need citrate for to absorb! when was last calcium and parathyroid lab test? When did you have a dexascan?
