I'm sure this has been asked but there are so many posts, I dont feel like searching through them Anyway, I'm wondering what happens before surgery, what kinds of tests, what all has to be or is done before they do it?? How long does it take to do and get a surgery date? Thanks!

Michele, Hello there... Every surgeon is different so it is hard to say but what I had done before they scheduled me for surgery was: (OK, forgive the miss spelled words ) Phyc Eval Cardiologist appt (stress test, EKG, Eco) Endocrinologist (thyroid check) Pulmonalogist (sleep test if needed, visit) Gastro Dr (scope) Nutritionist PCP clearance OK I think that was it.....after I did all those and got back the results we were ready to schedule my date. That took about 3 weeks to get date and Ins Approval. I wish you all the best, for a better answer you might just want to confirm with your surgeon. Wish you the best! Debra P

As Deb said every surgeon is different. I had to have: Psych. Evaluation Nutritionist Cardiologist (EKG, Echocardiogram & Stress Test) Ultrasound of Gall Bladder Thyroid Blood Work Breathing Test & Sleep Study (if necessary) Upper GI Series Endoscopy PCP clearance After all the test were done, I got a surgery date and then the surgeon put in for insurance approval. About a week before surgery, I had to go to the hospital for pre-surgical testing (blood work, medical history and chest x-ray). Have you made an appointment for your first consultation? Have you picked a surgeon? Go to Amy Williams' website. She has about 100 questions that you might want to ask listed there. Here's the link: http://www.amylhwilliams.com/questionsforsurgeon.html You don't have to ask them all if you don't want to, but it's a great place to start. Good luck!! Joanne

michele- it varies, it depends on your doctor and your health. my doctor required a letter from my pcp, a psch evaluation, 2 visists to the nutristionist, a gall bladder test, and i had to do a test were i had to drink barium and my doctor looked at my digestive tract and stomache (the name escapes me). pretty much that's all i was required to do. good luck on your journey !!! donna open rny mar 18 2003 282/140/135
