Need help with Protein Drinks
Hi Everybody
Went to Walmart last night I bought Dr Atkins chocolate I loved It my body hated it. I had my first Dumping What a Nightmare. I thought it was going to never end. I am 13 days out of sugery feel great lost 17 pounds. But I need a good protein drink I am afraid to buy the big protein powder what happens if I dont like it what a waste of money. Is 9grams of fat good or bad. I am very confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Michele, i just moved from farmingville last year, we used to be neighbors. I was on Berkshire Drive! ANyway the only protien powder that sits well with me is something called Jay Robbs. I got in Whole Foods here in the city. They have a small container so you can try it first and not spend to much money on it. I have tried a few of them and this is the only one that seems to dissolve the best in my coffee and my smoothies. In one scoop it has 0.5g of fat, 3.5g of carbs, 24g of protien, 2 g of sugar. He has a website also www.jayrobb.com I hope that helps!LisaMarie
I hated a lot of the protein shakes after surgery but I LOVE Elite Whey Chocolate Mint by Dymatize. However, I think it's a good idea if you go to bariatriceating.com and order samples first. I know their taster's choice sample pack sells for $23.95 and it comes with a few samples of the Elite as well as Protein Nectar, IDS and Protein Delite. I sent that sample pack to a friend for Christmas and he loved everything in there (but he's 2 years out).

They also sell a few individual samples for $1.75 each if you'd rather pick your own, but I really recommend that taster's pack, it's a great deal!

Michele:
Hey...Sorry about the bad experience w/ the protein. The canned/premixed proteins are first quite expensive, and second, not the best for US! Meaning the protein is from a milk source and not usually predigested whey (many cannot tolerate milk/milk products and even that needs a complete GI system to be absorbed, not tru of the predigested whey!). The 'dumping' you experienced may of been more that your a tad lactose intolerant than anything else! (*you didn't mention symptoms u experienced?)
Here is from atkins site on ingredients:
http://www.atkins.com/products/chocolate-delight-ready-to-drink-shake
INGREDIENTS: WATER, MILK PROTEIN BLEND (CASEINATE, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, WHEY POWDER)....
I will say most protein powders available in stores get a C or D rating forom me! Online is the way to go to get a not only good but tastey protein! **U CAN LOVE SOME I BELEIVE!***GNC has designer whey BUT it is a C in my book (but the best they have!)...So with that said SAMPLES as everyone else has mentioned ARE THE WAY TO GO! May cost a little in beginning to order lots to see what u like/tolerate ok!
I recommend
www.vitalady.com
www.bethproteinboutique.com
www.wlssupplies.com
www.bariatriceating.com
www.enjoyhealth.com
for samples for us! I have used all the sites.
I use Beths mainly as she is in NY! (lets keep our business local!)
but vitalady is a 10+ yr postop and helps so so many!
Susan Maria owns bariatric eating she is a wlser also!
Tastes vary I can tell you what I like as a guide but again try many and don't give up! The whey concentrates/blends may be better tolerated than a whey isolate (the isolates are so quickly absorbed/bioavailable that some experience a mini dumping like syndrome with these!)
Mix protein w/ water and ice, a magic bullet blender is a great investment! Spruce em up w/ 1tsp sf/ff jello or sf/ff pudding mix or davinicis sf syrups or extracts or spices!

I use vanilla PVL and white choc mostly as BASES to spruce up and make all sorts of flavors w/ my now 24 sf syrups!!! Limits are only your imagination!
I esp love the eggnog syrup in the white choc w/ dash nutmeg!
In fall I do 1/4 c pumpkin (20 cal) in a shake of white choc, w/ dash pumpkin pie spice, 4 ice cubes 6 -7 oz water and few glugs either spice blen or gingernbread sf syrup! YUMMY!
My usual am shake is 3 frozen strawberries (I need carbs for exercise in am) 1 scoop white choc or vanilla or raspberry PVL, 4 ice cubes 6-7 oz diet koolaid/Walmart brand strawberry or cherry or fruit punch flavor, whizzed up in magic bullet! Yummy Oh i add differen sf syrups such as peach or strawberry or almond of coconut etc!!! IT is all good!
www.netrition.com gas many syrups, www.vitalady.com has em only shhips in spring/summer due to freezing in fall/winter...
Davinci now has 51 Sugar Free flavors!

Hi Michelle,
Congratulations on your weight loss. Sorry to hear about the dumping.
Everyone's tastes are different when it comes to protein drinks.
Have you tried the Isopure Zero CARB liquid protein? They have it at The Vitamin Shoppe and GNC. The bottle is 20 ounces and 40 grams of protein. There are 4 flavors. Some people think it is too sweet, but you can try adding it to water.
I like the Achieve One Latte's. They taste like coffee and are 20 grams of protein. I started by getting them online at Bariatriceating.com. I found them at a store in Ronkonkoma called The Diet Shop. Even when Bariatriceating has sales, when you add up the shipping cost, it is more cost effective to go to Ronkonkoma.
I have 2 big containers of the Nectar. I can give you a few scoops for you to try before you purchase the big container.
I am also part of a support group that meets in out near you. We have a meeting this Tuesday the 17th.
If you would like, I can give you more information. My e-mail is [email protected].
Hi Michele,
I have to agree with LisaMarie. The Jay Robb proteins are made with stevia, a natural sweetener and they mix well. My dr. said not to eat anything with more than 5% fat, carbs, and sugars. This tends to prevent dumping syndrome. Ask your nutritionist they are always there to help you.
Best of luck.

Michele.
I am also 13 days out having had surgery on the 3rd. I ordered a bunch of samples from bariatriceating.com and am going through them. The thing that I have found to be most helpful is to pu****er or skim milk in blender add protein powder and then 2-3 ice cubes. There is something about the foam and the iciness that makes it go down so much easier.
I was never a chocolate lover but am finding that those are the most palatable. Matrix makes a nice one. The nectars are also good, fuzzy navel was decadent. Tonight I had an Isopure Banana that was very good. Just a hint of banana not too much.
Today I talked to Beth at bethsproteinboutique.com and I will be trying a bunch more samples before I order large amounts. I like the idea of the samples since I never know what I am in the mood for. She also suggested getting the 40 oz Isopure and making jello with that. I have been told that is available at GNC. That way you are always sucking on the protein. My biggest problem is getting in enough between the shakes and the pureed food. I never thought I would say this but I now know what full feels like. Good luck.
Liza
I am 5 mo. post-op and have tried a few protein drinks that were tolerable but not loveable!
Here is what I have been doing lately and I am REALLY enjoying it. I bought:
*Carnation Instant Breakfast Carb Control (the box comes with 4 different flavors, vanilla, 2 kinds of chocolate and a stawberry)
and mix it in the blender with:
*2 ice cubes
*8 oz of milk
*1 Scoop of Tasteless Whey Protein powder. I bought the powder at Bariatriceating.com but I think you can get it in GNC and other places online for cheaper.
This combo gives you a total of 30 grams of protein. It doesn't taste "fake" like some of the protein shakes I have tried. I also like the fact that I can chose what flavor I prefer at the moment. I drink 2 shakes a day and use it to wash down my vista vitamins. I find the shakes help the vitamins go down and sit better. Just a tip!
Good luck on your journey.
