Sleep Study...
Hi everyone ,
My visit to the pulmonologist went pretty well . He said that I have a very narrow passage way in the back of my throat that predisposes me to sleep apnea !! Based on all the answers I gave to his questions he feels I more than likely have it.
So now I am off for a sleep study in Febuary. I am however wondering how they are going to test me as I more then likely will not sleep a wink there. I barely get to sleep at home in my own bed most of the time !
What happens when you are not able to sleep while you are there ? Who has had a sleep study done ? Were you able to sleep ? Will they give you something to put you to sleep or to help you relax ?
I am so hoping I can go to sleep there !!!!
I go for my Endoscope on Wednesday !
Wish me luck !!!!!

Carol,
I did not really sleep the first night of my study. I watched TV and read. The techs said I did sleep but not deeply.
Here is my advice. Bring a small clip on fan. The rooms are suppose to be climate controlled but I found it too stuffy to breathe. Find out if their is a vcr with the tv, if so bring a tape to watch. Bring lots of reading material. The wiring and head gear is really uncomfortable but try not to pull at it. The worst part is the breathing apparatus that is placed in the nose.
If you do fall asleep and have an episode, the tech will come in undersome pretense and wake you. There is a call button that you hit if you have to get up to go to the bathroom. The tech has to undo the wires before you can move.
The second night (if you are having the two night study) they will outfit you with a breathing machine. You will probably have a nasal mask which is more comfortable than the other gear from the night before.
Bring the fan again. With the breathing mask I really believe you will get a nice night sleep. I did, I thought I had only slept an hour or so but the tech said I slept 6 hours straight. I was amazed.
Good luck with the tests. Good luck with the endo!!!

Sandra ,
Thanks for the advice . I will be sure and take it as well !
I can not sleep at home without some noise of some sort so I use a small fan at home .
I think I am only having the one night study . The Dr. did not mention two nights .
You said you did not sleep hardly at all the first night but by the second you slept , well you were probably so damn tired from the previous night that you could not do anything but sleep !
Thanks for wishing me luck ! I am sure gonna need it !

Carol,
I did not have to do this but wanted to post to wish you the best on Wed, I know you are not looking forward to this ~hugs~ Please let is know how it goes... I am sure they will give you enough this time to put you OUT.....well it will feel that way anyways.. Like I said before they do not put you under as far with the scope you had last week but more so with the endoscope.....
Take care

Hi Carol
First of all congradulation on your grandson.
Second my sleep study test was a 2 parter one without the C-pap and second part is with the c-pap machine(breathing machine which is a mask that's place over your nose and mouth and it forces air to keep the back of the throat open for air to pass through)that was a mouth full.If you need the c-pap the first night they will interupt your sleep and place the machine on.This is how it goes that night they want you to wear light pajamas or a top and bottoms.Your must have clean hair for the procedure then the take your vital signs. They start by putting cement glue to your scalp and attach wire to the scalp. Then place EKG wires to your chest and pulse oximeter to your finger(it monitors how much oxygen your body is receiving)
After your'e all connected to wires you either watch some TV or read book or magazine and you tell them when you are ready to sleep. All I can say I felt like I didn't sleep a wink. With all the equipement I had on,I felt so uncomfrtable everytime I moved.I was afraid something would come off. When you wake up in the morning they take your vital sign again and give you something to drink and eat(little muffin) .And thats better much how the sleep study test goes I hpoe it help a little.
Hope you're study test goes well,Because mines wasn't to bad.Now that I had lost the weight I don't have to wear the c-pap anymore my pulmonolgist set me free.
If anyone has more info please do .
