Food and drinks to purchase
Hey Andrea and congrats your new surgery date, it is now on the same day of my surgery date, (provided I get Ins approval).
Concerning the protein drinks, I asked the same question and I was overwelmed with responses. I decided to do my own research and I am still working on it. Currently I am using MYopro I purchased it ata GNC health food store in a local mall. I also tried Advantage from Walmart they have a 4-pac of 11 oz bottles. To be honest they taste like health food, yukky but I can adjust. When mixed with water they taste lousey. I mix in a blender with ice and skim milk. Someone suggested adding flavored extract like vanillia to increase the flavor. That combined with the ice/skim milk in a blender provides a frothy milk shake type drink.
Good luck!
Kenny
Hi Andrea,
Congratulations on your decision to live a healthier life! I got tired of the carb advantage shakes really fast. They are too sweet and just not for me. I found Designer protein (chocolate) at Walmart for around $20 but has 46 servings. It's thin when mixed with 6-8 oz water and easy to go down. I mix it with warm water, cold water doesnt sit well with me still. I also found in the natural food store, Jay Robb's chocolate whey protein and it's made with stevia, a natural sweetner. Very low carb and fat and no sugar. He has many flavors including vanilla, strawberry and banana. The stuff takes a blender or mixer to fully dissolve it though.
I recently found individual sample packs of Ketoslim, also low fat, carb and sugars. It comes in a variety of flavors including mixed berry, strawberry and pineapple.
Sometimes I mix the proteins in Atkins drinks made from powdered drink mixes (apple is my favorite.)
Anyway, it's all a matter of individual taste. If you can get a few sample packets from a natural health food store, then you can test as you go along. You just want to make sure that you have enough for about a week following surgery.
Again, best of luck.
Linda
Andrea:
I posted a whole lot of info for Kenny: search the older posts this is the one I responded to! Similar info...
1/1/06 6:30 PM PROTEIN SHAKES???
I will say CIB is 'crap in a box' IMHO, it is 70 cal ~12g carbs (milk sugar) and ONLY 4 measly protein grams, NOT hard to see this is not a protein source at all! abd NOT a good idea for any benefit postop, unless u want it to help u not lose wt and crave more sugar that is! A whey protein should be ~120 cal a scoop for 23g protein a isolate or concentrate that is predigested (not the calium caseinate or milk protein found in many canned stuff such as atkins or the CIB whch is not oow carb or sugar free, it is only no sugar added!) and 0-3g fat and 0-3g carbs....
Buy samples from either:
www.vitalady.com or www.bethsproteinboutique.com (she has the pvl vitalady doesnt!)to see what u like w/o buying a tub and wasting it!
My favs are #1 PVL whey gourmets any of 15 flavors, #2 champion pure whey stack choco or bannaa , #3 the nectars are good too! (except the very berry cherry yuck!) they are like koolaid kind of!
KEEP IN MIND your taste buds may change postop! (if having a bypass)....Documented researchin shcolarly OBesity surgery journals n this!!!
Spruce up shakes w/ things like SF syrups or sf/ff pudding powder (1tsp or so) or diet jello powder, extrcts, spices! And get a magic bullet blender to make em good! ok ill stop rambling before I repeat what I told Kenny, check that post out ok!

I used to use carb solutions rich chocolate protein shakes (Wal-mart stopped carrying them so I ordered them from amazon.com for $9 a can) but I got tired of them soon after my surgery. (Then again I got tired of everything!!)
Now I am addicted to Elite Whey (www.Dymatize.com) Chocolate Mint. I blend it up with 7 oz of milk and frozen mixed berries so it's not too sweet tasting and I easily can drink 2 or 3 of them a day (which is a big help since I have an aversion to food lately )! I usally have one right before I go work out and each one with the 7 oz of milk has 30 grams of protein.
The guys at dymatize.com were nice enough to send me a few samples and then I orderd a huge 5 lb container for $26 from www.bodybuilding.com.
www.Bariatriceating.com has a great sampler pack that I sent to a friend for Christmas! Try some samples to see what you like before you invest a lot because I ended up with a lot of stuff I didn't like after surgery! And I was warned, but stubborn girl that I am, I guess I didn't listen. That's ok though, I sent all the protein stuff I didn't like to a friend who had WLS two years ago and is still good about sticking with a high protein diet!

Andrea. Good Luck on your upcoming surgery. I found alot of those protein drinks tasted I found a 4 pack called "Body for Life" I bought it at the Vitamin Shoppe. I tastes pretty good. If you need Protein and you can begin to eat a bit please try "POWER CRUNCH BARS" They taste so good you will think you are cheating. The Vanilla is the best. If you look on this website you will see the nutritional values.
Keep us posted and good luck on your journey to meet us on the "LOSING SIDE"
