Hi I am new to the board. My surgery is scheduled for January 3rd and I am starting to get apprehensive. I know I have made the right choices but needless to say still anxious. Any advice on protein supplements and some of you mention supplements, where would I find these. Not finding much in my local supermarket. Liza

Liza, If there is a Vitamin Shoppe or GNC near you, you can get protein suppliments. I use Soy protein due to an intolerance of Whey. But if you do not have any intolerances, either one will provide you with the protein you need. Isopure drinks are good sources of protein also. Again, I can not have Whey so if I do have one, it is only a small amount. Also, beans are good fiber and protein but I would wait until you are in mushie stage for that. I hope that more people post here to give you more info. I am sure I am missing lots of ways to get the protein in. Sandra

Liza, Hun I just wanted to say congrats on your up and coming surgery. I know I was very excited and nervous about mine as well and that is normal. This will be a major change in your life, get ready...WHAT a ride. I wish you all the best, I will keep you in my thought and prayers! I would try the sample packs at bariatriceating.com, that is a great site! Also GNC stores have Isopure which I found to be a great protein. Also try the Stallone puddings, they give good protein and do not taste all that bad! You can get them at GNC also but if you Froogle them in Google you can see who has them on sale! I wish you the best! Debra P

thanks for all the wonderful advice and words of encouragement. I hope that all goes well, right now I am anxiously awaiting hearing back from my PCP. She had me come in last Friday for a routine exam and on hearing of the upcoming surgery date, she did an EKG, found some irregularities had me go for a stress test(Mon) which the preliminary eval showed all fine. This was after she had specifically asked for the cardiologist to look it over and make determinations since the surgery is so soon. She calls today(Thursday) to say that there was a possibility of ischemia with exercise, duh I am obese. She wants me to go and have the thallium stress test so that there is no potential we can't go ahead with surgery due to questions. I asked her to call the surgeon and see if this is necessary. Now hopefully she will call back, I hate this waiting. Don't mean to dump but this seems like the place where people will have the answers. Liza

Hi Liza! It's me , Heather from SEPTA!!! How exciting for you! Are you with Galivn? Boss?O'malley? Iannoli? I had mine with Galvin at RGH. Wonderful experience. Call me! I would love to chat. We're at the in-laws until thursday night, but maybe I can calm some of your pre-op jitters. I was a basket case for months before my surgery. The best place to get protiens locally is from www.bethsproteinboutique.com. She delivers locally for $3. She carrries all the best stuff, the Nectars, Matrix, Champion, even the AchiveOne coffee drinks. If you want hands-on shopping, the best place is the Vitamin shoppe in Pittsford across from Wegmans. During my first days home it was jus****er, crystal light ( watered down), chicken broth, and just for variety, I would strain some broth-based soups for some different flavor. I was allowed the protein shakes made with water, and I really only wanted the fruity Nectars, not the creamy types. When they tell you you will have no appetite, they are so right. It was an effort just to get enough liquid in. After I was cleared to go to full liquids I made high protein puddding by making the sf pudding and stirring in 2 scoops of Champion protein powder. I put the vanilla in butterscotch and pistachio, and of course put chocolate in the chocolate. I bought 2 cans of the unflavored Procel but YUK! they gave that to me in the hospital with the chicken broth and it was awful! Have a peaceful holiday and i wish you the best for a new beginning in the New Year!!! Heather RNY 6/13/05 Dr. Galvin RGH 297h/238s/174c/125g
