Hi everyone. Its me again lol Does anyone know how long you have to be off work for open RNY? How long does that drainage tube stay in? I am just looking for an idea so I can put in for the time off at work. I realize that there is a chance of complications and all that, but assuming everything will go smoothly, how much time should I expect. I want to get back as soon as possible because I am not telling anyone there what I am doing, but thats a whole other story. lol Thanks

Karen, I had lap RNY but I was out for 3 weeks total and then the 4th week I went back 1/2 days, my tube stayed in for about 1 week. Take care and I wish you all the best ~hugs~ Debra P

You should ask your surgeon. Mine initially told me 4 - 6 weeks if everything went ok. Any complications could make it longer. I had two drain tubes when I woke up. They took one out the day after surgery, the other one would have come out in a week, but I had a complication, so it stayed in for about a month. I'm two years out this coming Friday, have lost 150 lbs. and I feel great. Good luck to you. Joanne

I had an open RNY and I was only off two weeks. I don't do any lifting and stuff. I am in a clerical position, so it was easy to return quickly. I had zero complications and the doc pulled the drains before I left the hospital. Each case is different - we are all totally unique. Discuss it with your surgeon. Some folks just state they are getting gall bladder surgery, (which I did have at the same time as my RNY because Dr. C said if it showed signs of impending, they would remove it at the time of the RNY to avoid further surgery. You might also find out about that from your surgeon just to make sure). Good luck and God bless!

i would say if you had a sit down job and no complications with your surgery then 3 weeks would be sufficiant... you want to make sure your off liquids ... at least thats what my doc told me ... good luck with your surgery .. oh and i replied to your email..... Stacy

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess I will plan on 3 wks and go from there. I go see my surgeon on Dec. 28th to go over everything before my surgery on Jan. 5th (28 days and counting..yippee). I wanted to give work some sort of idea on how long I would be gone a little sooner though. Stacy I got your email and I am emailing you back. Thanks again everyone and Im sure you will be hearing from me again in the next few months lol. I always seem to come up with more questions. Karen
