Has anyone had a vitamin k deficency prior to surgery?
Hi all,
I recieved a phone call yesterday from my surgeons office .
They said that my blood clotting factor is poor. So my surgeon (whom I trust completely) wants me to take Vitamin K fof 3 weeks and then get my ptt test (blood work) done again to see if it helps. I have had other surgery's and never had an issue with bleeding after so this is a shock to me that I would be vitamin k deficient.
I was wondering if anyone else here has had this prior to surgery? If you did then did you have to take vitamin k and did this help ?
Thanks Everyone,
& ,
Carol

Hi Carol!
I have heard of lack of vitamin K in blood results before but not in relation to gastric bypass.
From what I can remember from my biology days at college I am pretty sure that a lack of vitamin K usually results in thinning of the blood, kind like what aspirin does to blood. That is the main reason they want you to stop taking aspirin way before you have surgery. Like people who get nose bleeds usually have a vitamin K deficency. The lack of this vitamin usually means you blood easier and for longer, even clotting can happen.
This is more of a dietary problem than a medical one. You just probably need to eat some things high w/vitamin K. I think dark leafy things are but I am sure you can do a quick search online to find out some good food choices. Good Luck!
