Worried

Hi all, this only my 3 or 4th posting on this message borad. Prreviously I had posted that I have to see the dietician for 18 mo. before my ins. co. will pay for my WLS...Anyways, my first dilemma is, that I have lost 12 lbs. (in 5 months)so far; (basically to appease the dietician & ins.). We all know that for the morbidly obese, that diets do not work for us, eventually all of our weight creeps back (and then some) after every diet attempt. So, now the dietcian expects me to lose 5 more pounds before I see her in 3 weeks. If I keep up at this rate..I"m afraid I will not qualify for WLS!!!!! I have 13 more months left!!! My second dillema is, I went to the E.R. last night (bad stomach ache, fever, chills, etc.) Long story short, I have diverticulitis...Am I still a candidate for WLS?? Could I follow the recommended diet the M.D. in the E.R. gave me? (It's a diet high in fiber...grains, beans, etc.). Would I even be able to consume all that roughage after WLS??? I need advice badly. Thank you. Suzy

Susan, Many of us had to lose weight before surgery. I lost 30 lbs. When I count the weight I have lost from wls I always count that 30 lbs as well. So do most people. Give it a chance. You need to speak to your surgeon, & your pcp about the high fiber diet, your divericulitis may be cured after surgery. Give them a call. Best of luck, Linda

HEY SUZY.... i had to loose 25 lbs pre op (10 percent). I love now that i have that weight plus the weight from the surgery keeping my numbers unbelievably high in small amounts of time. I dont see why diverticulitis would prevent from this surgery...u cant eat foods with seeds .....i now a women who came down with it post op and is manageing. I guess that is up to your surgeon. HANG in their and do the best you can all will work out in all good time. LISA 310/219/onederland

Hi Lisa.. Thanks for the advice....I feel better already ... I started to panic that I lost too much wieght in the 5 months time, seeing the dietician...I was afraid that in 13 more months, I'd be below the acceptable weight for the WLS....I guess if I purposely try to take off the pounds more slowly, it might work. You know that my Ins. co. is looking for an excuse to deny me. My ins. has an exclusion, however, there is a clause that states that if you are "Morbidly Obese" with a BMI of over 40, with 2 or more co-morbidities, they will approve on a case to case basis. Right now, I have a BMI o****o now, I've got to find out if my newly diagnosed diverticulitis is going to affect my getting WLS..I'll ask my Doc. today...Thanks for answering me so quickly... Suzy

Don't worry so much--If you have weight related problems your insurance company will not deny you! I am considered a "lightweight" but because I have several weight related illnesses I was approved. You have to think positively! Everything will go well--your surgeon knows what's best! Marian S.C.

I also had diverticulitis problems -irritable bowel and often had bladder trouble...Surgery was not a problem for me... the high blood pressure was and High cholestral- borderline diabetic was a problem. Actually I feel the best I have....6 weeks post op too. I eat KASHI GO LEAN as a snack and breakfast a couple times a week and it keeps me regular. We eat a lot of protein and drink a lot I think it aids the weightloss and digestion.. I found after surgery it is all about choice.. I eat better cause I show progress and feel better. Good luck as always speak to your doctor (primary) first...

Thanks Pattiann... I'm feeling better already. It's good to know that having diverticulitis will not prevent me from having WLS. I will speak to my doc. about it. Suzy
