Surgery in 4 days and still haven't shook off the horror stories!
Hi Maggie!
I'm so sorry that, instead of supporting you, those you know are scaring you. It's so unfair!
Yes, there are horror stories, but they are the exception, not the norm. Remember, too, that sometimes complications are brought about by a person not doing what they should - not getting up to walk frequently (both in the hospital and at home), not using their breathing aparatus, not eating or drinking correctly immediately after and/or in the months following their surgery, etc. So, although you can't totally eliminate the risk, you can reduce your risk level by doing what your doctor and all of us here supporting you instruct you to do. If you "follow the rules," you will be much, much less likely to have any problems and avoid being one of those horror stories. Just by you having postied here, I have a feeling that you will be one of the success stories! After all, you are not only concerned about your future, but you are willing to reach out to others in order to learn and also to get support. It shows that you have the right attitude!
BTW... does your surgeon have a support group? Most do, or the hospital may have one or more. I'd advise you to find a support group, since being part of one will not only help you emotionally, but increase your chances of being a WLS success story.
Keep your spirits up! You will be fine! We will all be thinking and praying for you.
