2 weeks post op - I need help
Hello all,
I am 14 days post op and have lost 22 pounds. When I went to have staples removed 3 days ago DR. had to reopen my largest incision on the left side and drain the infection(ouch). He sent me home with the wound still open and draining it is really gross. Has anyone experienced this before? If so how long does the draining last? It is very discouraging to see that everyone had such an easy time and I have not been able to even get around until recently.
Thank you for the help!!!
Lisa
Lisa, it just goes to show that we are all very different. I am happier than hell that my doc did not use staples. Personally, I think staples oughta be against the damn law. Anyhow, I didn't have drains when I left the hospital for the RNY, but i did for the tummy tuck.
this is a tiny setback and it will go away ~ just take care of yourself! and God Bless!
Lisa,
Hi...I'm sorry for your pain and discomfort. The draining could last a couple of weeks. Keep it clean and packed. Me personally, I didnt have staples...but believe me when I tell you that there a lots of people who dont have an easy time. Complications happen, it's a reality of this surgery. The second day in the hospital I failed my leak test......and I couldnt really get around for about 3 weeks...I thought I was a freak!!! but I've come to realize that we all go through different things some better....some worse, but hopefully down the road we will all be happier and healthier.

Thank you Janean for the comforting words. I know I could be a lot worse off. I am trying to stay positive but it is hard. I am blessed that I have not had any eating or eliminating issues. Did you have pain everywhere for quite a while? It has been 2 weeks and my back is so painful and the rib area. Thank you Janean for being a guiding light in the dark hours.
Lisa
Lisa,
You are very welcome....I'm happy to try to help in anyway possible....I had a pain that radiated from my ribs around to my back also...in fact I thought to myself...."maybe the surgeon broke a rib when he was in there" I walked completely hunched over and could not stand up straight...it too****il 3 weeks for me to feel better. I put a heating pad on my side that went around to my back and that helped sooooo much. Give it a try.

Hi Lisa
I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a rough time with your drain, but please don't feel that you are the only one having a tough time. I'm 16 days out and like you, I have gone through hell since the surgery. My complications aren't the same as yours, I didn't have a drain put in, but I did leak necrotic fat from my scar -- a rather nasty sight. I've also had a great deal of pain, an almost constant low grade fever, and enough nausea to last me a lifetime... but each day now I'm starting to feel a bit more human.
Please try to remember that everyone is different and that our bodies all heal at different rates. Also, try to remember that how you feel right now isn't going to be how you feel next week or next month. Your body has been through a trauma and now it needs time to heal... but in the long run you (and me) will experience the benefits and these complications will be a thing of the past.
Take comfort in small things... get a manicure, read a good book, take out your goal outfit and daydream about how fantastic you are going to look in it... the more positive you stay the better you will feel.
Hugs,
Lisa Z.
I had an open RNY. I had a drain removed from the part that was my old stomach. I drained so much I had to use a soup bowl at one point to catch all the stomach acid.... which burned me. Forget gross- it burned! I was told to lay so gravity could aid the drainage and put vasoline on the surrounding skin. My MD was prompt and great in calling me back. I actually used sanitary pads to catch the draining fluid. It ended and I sealed up. Everyone has different things happen- this is one lesson I learned. I have only thrown up one time, can eat everything (I do not eat sugar or simple carbs) but I can eat raw veggies which other people cannot eat. I still have a very painful long tight scar which still itches and drives me crazy! But it was worth it. The draining will go away but you should call your MD's office for help. dawna
