My surgery was denied
My throid levels are high so 1199 denied my surgery. Seems they want my obesity to be due to thyroid....but I only had to start thyroid medicine within the past few months and I've been battling my weight all of my life. Went to my CORI Center today for another test and met with my sugeon and Regina (so cool). They said not to worry and told me what I needed to do. I am so disappointed. I need to have the surgery next month because my daughter will be away. This sucks because I feel helpless and at the mercy of someone who just may be having a bad day. Also the CORI center told me not to call the insurance fund directly because they can be nasty. I've just been crying and crying. I'm desperate to have the band and there finally seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel. I'm scared it won't get approved and I'll always be fat.....

I don't understand why they would deny you for a thyriod condition. I also have an underactive thyroid and was overweight all my life. I was on my thyriod meds for a few years though and it has been regulated. I would try and find out why if it is only thyriod. Yes it has some to do with weight gain but I didn't lose much weight once I was on the medicine. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck!

I have a thyroid condition also. I've been taking synthroid for 5 years. Karry is right... this should not have anything to do with gastric bypass. As a matter of fact, if anything, having the surgery may improve the condition. My endocrinologist had to reduce my dosage of synthroid about 6 months after my RNY.
The only thing that I could see that could hold up surgery is that the doctor would want to see your thyroid levels in the normal range, but that shouldn't have anything to do with insurance.
My advice is go see an endocrinologist. I hope everything works out for you and if you need an endocrinologist, I have good one located in Great Neck, NY.

Thanks for your responses. I am seeing an endocrinologist who put me on synthroid. My levels were low-normal. Anyway....I stopped taking the synthroid and my levels went beserk. Apparently my surgery was denied because they want to attribute my obesity to my thyroid when I was heavy prior to and since being on it. Basically they tried to find something to deny it and I gave it to them on a silver platter. When I told my endocrinologist what I planned to do (the lap band) he wanted me to go to his guys at one of the hospitals he's affiliated with. I read the reviews about those hospitals here and I don't want to go to them. I like my surgeon, I like their program (especially the follow-up), and I like the nutritionist. Basically what he told me was to take the pills and see him in a month. What CORI told me was to take the meds and go back next week for another blood draw to prove to insurance it's under control. Maybe all is not lost and I'll still be able to have the surgery as scheduled. I may, however, be looking for a new endocrinologist, lol. Please cross your fingers for me...I so want to have it and get on with my life, know what I mean? Suzanne
im so sorry to hear that. right now i am waiting to hear if i will be denied . im pretty sure I will be. I just dont understamd how these insurances can deny morbidly obese people who need help. its very upsetting and makes me angry. i wish you the best of luck and fight for what you want. dont quit.
