Internal Bleed due to WLS
Hey All:
Some of you may remember me asking a question about black stool a couple of weeks ago.....
I had my surgery on 5/12/05.
well - I ended up in the emergency room last week with a blood pressure of 60/40 and a heartrate of 142.
Because of the surgery I was bleeding internally and ended up receiving 3 units of blood. I was in ICU for almost 5 days and just came home last night.
Where my stomach and small intestine were re-attached, there was a bleed. An ulcer developed. I was told that if I didn't have this surgery, none of this would have happened.
I almost died.... all to be thin!!! At this point I am having some regrets about having the surgery.
Just wanted to let you all know.
-Dee

DM,
I am glad you are back home and doing ok now...~Hugs~ It is important to hear all sides of this story, the good and the bad. That is how we learn and come to this choice in life.
Hun I know you are upset right now but I am sure you did not do it "just" to be thin, think of all the reasons you wanted to do this to begin with. Better health in the long run, more active and so on. We each have our own reasons and I know when things do not go as planned we sometimes forget that. Try and focus on on getting better and on your way to a new you......~hugs~ I will keep you in my thought and prayers....
Take care

Hi Dee....
First of all I am really sorry to hear what happened to you, and really glad that you're doing better now. God Bless you today and always...
I am pre-op, and reading your post just now scraed the crap out of me. My reasons for doing this is to be healthy enough to run around with my six year old. The last thing I want is to end up leaving him.......I just need to know. Aren't there tests performed on you to detect things like this? Shouldn't your dostor have picked up on something like a Bleed? Did this happen because of strain to the incicision or anything? I am just so scared right now. I'm sorry for all the questions? Thanks in advance for the answers.......

Hi Blanquie,
I've been here on the board for about 1 yr. now and have researched this tool very well. As any other surgeries there are risk involved and not everyone will be completely 100% satisfied. I am very sorry to hear that things didn't go very well for this person and I know at this time she's regreting the surgery, but please do not let this stop you from going ahead with your surgery. I am having my done hopefully August 15, 2005 and I am having Lap RNY, it God permits. I know that this may scare you, but it also has to do with the care you provide yourself after surgery, however, internal bleeding is something that should be detected right away, but at times technology is not that fast and like everything else, we need to feel the pain before we as human rush to the hospital. Everyone is different and each individual has a different output on this surgery and why they have chosen to do this. I personally want to be able to run after my 2 little ones, without having to stop every 2 minutes to catch my breath, I want to be able to go up a flight of stairs with out feeling like a dragon at the end, I want to feel good, be able to see my kids grow up, I lost my mother at a very young age (17) and she was only 48 when she passed away, now if I keep this weight on, I too will be dead by 48, weight does affect your health. Now I know is only right to feel nervous, but check with your surgeon, pcp and go with faith that this tool would work for you as much as possible and let you enjoy life with your son. If you have any concerns and wish to email, feel free to.
Best of Luck

I'm very sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad you are home now and I hope you are feeling much better.
It's normal to have some regrets when things don't go the way we had hoped. I got peratinitis a week after my surgery, wound up the ER two days in a row and ultimately had to have emergency to clean out the infrection. I was in the hospital for 10 days and home on disability for a total of 3 months. I was miserable for alot of that time, but let me tell you, if you asked me would I do it all over again exactly the same way.... HELL YESSSSSS!!!!! without a doubt. I'm down 147 lbs., feel wonderful, no more pain in my knees, no more blood pressure medication. I can walk again and do so many things that I couldn't do before.
What I'm trying to say is that things might not look so good right now, but 6 months from now you're going to be a very happy woman. I wish you all the best.
Dee
I was sorry to read about your problem. I am glad your on the mend and I am hoping you will feel 100 % soon.
I know when I began my surgery research, I read any and all of the things I could get my hands on. I also was very very well imformed by my surgeon. Right down to knowing that one risk WAS death........I know we all feel that cant or wont happen to US, but, the risk is there.
I am sorry you had to go through this and I am sorry you have your regrets now, I cant say I would not have the same feelings.....I did not have any real battles.....Soo I cant say how I would feel if it were me and the shoe was on the other foot........One thing I can say is I am happy your on your road to recovery, and I wish you the best on your journey.
Take Care and God Bless You

Hi Dee~
Sorry to hear things went bad for you.....I remember replying to your question about black stool.....Glad you are on your way to feeling better.
As everyone else has stated, you didn't have this surgery just to be "thin".....Honestly if you think about all you went through prior to having the surgery it wasn't just for that. You had to have had some medical probs. and even though you had a prob. with the bleeding you know there is always a chance of something happening after. That goes along with ANY surgery....I'm sure it scared you and it would me too but don't regret having the surgery....Think of it as a set back and if you hadn't had the surgery, how long would you live being severly overweight with other medical issues???
Best of Luck and stay positive....it will get better!

Hi Dee,
I am sorry you experienced complications with this surgery, but for the most part, those of us who have this surgery know there are risk, and this is when we out weigh the pros and cons to go thru with this.
You obviously weighed yours and decided the pros far outweighed the cons, and decided to go thru with it.
A bump in the road always makes us loose sight of where we are on our path. Just remember why you did this, and the benefits you will reap.
You stated you almost died to be thin.....well, in my case, I was already dead at my heaviest weight. Now I am over 100 pounds lighter, and I am finally starting to live. I have more energy, and self esteem than I have ever had, and I am healthy also.
Remember, everything happens for a reason, and it is not given to us if we are not able to handle it. We are not given life, to not be able to live.....enjoy your new one!
