Hi Everyone. I went to the doctor yesterday for my monthly checkup and he had the results of my bloodwork done -- I've got Type 2 Diabetes. I gotta tell you I am freaking out about this. No one in my family has ever had it (but then again no one in my family has ever weighed as much as me either, ) and I don't know how to stop feeling like I'm going to die from this. Does anyone here have T2 Diabetes? Can you help me by telling me what the heck I can eat and what I can't. I mean I know the obvious stuff.. no pastries, cakes, bread, cookies, pasta, rice -- ya know, all the good stuff.. lol.. but I don't know what I can eat other than lean meat. I've had nothing but salad since yesterday afternoon and all it's done is raise my blood sugar. Any help at all would be appreciated. My only good news yesterday was that my doctor said that once I have the wls that it was more than likely that this will be reversed and that I wouldn't have diabetes anymore (thank God!). But until I lose the weight I will be battling this nasty disease. "Sweet" Lisa

Dear Lisa: Just hang in there. You'll have it beat in no time. I hear so many stories about people who have had wls and have completely reversed the diabetes. I guarantee you'll get a million emails telling you the same thing! When do you think you'll have the surgery? Suzanne

Lisa, Diabetes can be a scary thing to hear you have, but remember that millions of people have this disease & live completely normal lives. I personally am not a diabetic (at least not yet) however, I grew up with it in my family. My Grandmother was T2, my mother was insulin dependent, my Father is T2 and recently 2 of my sisters have been diagnosed as T2 diabetics. Going by the glycemic index is a good idea for your diet. Low glycemic foods do not release alot of glucose, therefore, will not spike your blood sugar. Your Dr. should have a list of foods that you should be eating/avoiding. The American Diabetes Association also has a website at diabetes.org which also has a nutrition & recipe section. Also, on a good note, this surgery has been known to stop T2 diabetes with a higher chance being on recently diagnosed patients. So who knows, you may be diabetes free before you know it. Take care & keep us posted. God Bless Tammy
