Halt on surgeries in NY?!?
My doctor - Dr. Adaniel - told me that due to insurance concerns, he has to get all his surgeries scheduled before 6/30. Then one of his nurses told me that NYS has put a halt on surgeries after 7/1. I asked Southside Hospital if that was the case and they had heard nothing about it, but said that Dr. Adaniel would be on vacation the last week of June.
I am a teacher whose last day of school is 6/24. I have had all of my testing and am ready for surgery. If it's not this summer, it will have to wait a year and all the tests will have to be done again.
Has anyone heard about this or is the Doctor giving me a story to protect his vacation? Should I look for a new doctor at this point? HELP!!

Hi Suzanne
Unfortunately the information you heard is true. I have a friend who is also a teacher and works with me in the same school, and she was scheduled for her surgery with Dr. Adaniel for July 8th. Dr A's office called and tried to move her up to June 21, which she had to decline because school does not end until the 24th and she needs to pack up her classroom for the summer. The reason for this is NYS has come up with a new law that states that surgeons must be certified as Bariatric Surgeons rather than general surgeons. Insurance companies are becoming more particular in having surgeons certified in Bariatrics doing the surgeries. The reason why Dr A said he will be on vacation is because:
1. His daughter Judy (also his PA) is getting married at the end of June
2. He needs to go away to take the two week course so he will be a CERTIFIED BARIATRIC SURGEON
I hope this answers your questions. I would not worry yet as long as you can get a date that will allow you the time you need to recover. In my case I needed six weeks because I work in special ed and my position involves lifting etc. Good Luck and please don't worry, I am sure everything will work out fine!
Hugs

I sure hope that the information you received is wrong. I'm scheduled for surgery on July 20th (with Dr. Iannoli from Rochester) and haven't heard boo from my doctor about anything like that. But you can bet your last dollar I will be on the phone with his office tomorrow morning and asking about it!
I don't know if you should look for a new doctor but if I were in your shoes, I would be calling my insurance company to ask about his claim as well as other doctors in your area to see if they are tooting the same info.
Good luck to you Suzanne.. please let us know how you made out. Hugs to you.

No what it is is that some hosp. are going to stop doing the surgeies. A hosp. here in CNY is stopping doing it because alot of people aren't payin there bills and insurance reason. Alot of people that get it don doesn't realaze that it most cases the Insurance compney says ok we'll ok it but were only giving "X" amount of money for it. Then the doc and the hospt. have to try to do whats best for you, but get payed and lot of the times there in the red. So alot of placed are cutting off surgeies after June 30 so they can try to make money in other places.
