Surgery In Montefiore?
Hi all
I have been battling back and forth for the past year trying to make the decision to have this surgery. I am seriously considering it once again. A friend/coworker refered me to this page for support. I have been reading and surfing for the past week.
If I do go through with the surgery might I add I am petrofied.... It will be done in Montefiore Medical Center afiliated with Alber Einstein.. 1 concern that I have is I haven't come across any feedback for Montefiore...
Has anyone had surgery there?
Hi Coqui,
I know dozens of folks that have had surgery at Montefiore hospital. Literally DOZENS. Most of them had it with Dr. Teixiera or one of the surgeons working with him.
Dr. Tex has recently left Montefiore and is now at St. Lukes Roosevelt. Now, I know some die-hard Montefiore lovers will get annoyed with me but I'm going to speak my mind here.
I used to swear by Montefiore hospital until about maybe 7 - 8 years ago when I noticed that the hospital was going down quality-wise in my opinion. This place had been my family's hospital of choice for years and years so we do have a basis for comparison.
To me, Montefiore got large and the quality of care deteriorated. I was not happy with the condition of the hospital itself, the cleansiness of the hospital, the responsiveness of many (not all) of the nurses on the bariatric surgery floor, and the admin staff for the weight loss surgery unit. They do, however, have a very good support group and I have attended a few sessions there, even though I didn't have my surgery there.
Now in all fairness, there will be folks who will respond to you that will say that I am wrong. Well, I am giving my opinion based on my own personal standards.
What I know is a fact is that in the past few years the "head" of the weight loss surgery area has changed over from Dr. Goodman to Dr. Teixiera to whomever is doing the surgeries there now.
If you did decide to go with Montefiore, I would suggest looking into the Albert Einstein hospital located on Eastchester Road. That part of the Montefiore family still basically operates with the quality of care it has a reputation for.
Along with researching a hospital ,I would suggest researching surgeons as well in order to make an informed choice that ensures you having a safe and successful surgery.
Also, here is the obesityhelp.com link to Montefiore hospital. You can read the reviews and judge for yourself.

Hi Shelli,
I had surgery at Montefiore. The surgeons are great!. My doctor is Dr. Karen Gibbs. She is excellent!. I think you are a little scared and that's natural. This is a major surgery and you have every right to be afraid. You probably have people telling you not to have the surgery and I am sure they mean well but you have to do this for yourself. This is how I looked at it, and I'm going to be very blunt."If dying from the surgery is your fear just look at it this way, You can die from being overweight!"
I would rather take a chance at a normal healthy life and have had my children know that at least I tried then to just sit and eat myself to death. JUST PRAY AND PUT IT IN GOD HANDS!.Good luck and I will be praying for you.If you have any questions you can email me at [email protected]
Your tough love surgery buddy,
Annette
