Kristen,
Your Mom is right - underactive thyroid is very common. I have had it for about 10 years now. The good new is how much better you'll feel once you start on medications and get your levels to where they should be. When my underactive thyroid was not treated it was almost impossible for me to get through the day without a nap. Now, that is not the case. Not that I don't still love my naps.
Feel free to ask any questions and vent away.

It is a very common problem. I have had it for years and I am doing okay...just pay attention to the warning signs that your body gives you and keep your doctor appointments and you will be just fine
