OT:NC native needs advice about Penn Station
I know this is a strange place to post this question, but I love my local support board and the main board for OH. I am thinking about taking a train trip with my daughter for her 15th birthday in Oct. from NC to New York. But I have never been somewhere so big, and I am afraid to leave the train station. Just wondered if there are reasonable hotels nearby and how hard it is to get around by cab. I don't have a fortune, but the train ride I think would be beautiful in the fall. I am going more for the trip there, than the visit. Like I said, New York scares me! Any advice welcome.

Stacie.. as a New Yorker and a Travel agent to boot... I must say NYC is quite easy to get around. I used to be afraid of it myself, but there are taxi's right out side of Penn Station.. some great Maps that you can get and if you stay in the mid town area, you can find some reasonable hotels and lots with in walking distance. You can get discount tickets to shows, and walk around Times Square - And what you can't walk to.. a taxi is but an arm wave away. There are passes you can buy that will give you 2 days admission to museums, and most tourist attractions like the Empire State building, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.. and great boat tours around Manhattan.
Dont be afraid of New York.. just have fun with it! It will be a great experience for you both!

Stacie,
Manhattan is beautiful, fun, education and expensive! I haven't had to stay in manhattan often as I live about 40 min from Penn on the LIRR. But the one time I've had to stay in manhattan the best deal I could find in a pretty nice hotel was at La Quinta.
