Birth Control

I have been trying to think of everything to ask the doctor and was just thinking that I never asked, can I still take my birth control pills after surgery, or should I look into getting Depo Provera injections. My surgery is only 58 days away and just thought about it. Any help would be appreciated, I see the doctor on the 30th of this month. Thanks Debbie

Hi Debbie, You may hear conflicting things on this but from what my surgeon said it's ok to continue on the pill... Some surgeons or Nurse Practitioners don't believe you absorb the pill correctly after the bypass but my surgeon does think that we do... I got the bright idea of taking the Depo shot in December and it was a big mistake... My body flipped out and I had a 30+ day period (bleeding the whole time)... You may have better luck if you choose to try it but I know I would never try that thing again... It was rough on me... I'm not sure what your surgeon will tell you but usually it's not a problem to continue on the pill... They just recommend you try and stay on a BC method for at least 18 months at my practice... Definitely ask them about it when you go in for an appointment... Good luck on your WLS journey hon!! Chelle
