My husband went to the nutritionist today and she told him that Carnation instant Breakfast (4oz 3x's A day) is enough protien. Why does everyone on here have different types of protein brands? Is it the flavor?,better tasting?,or the protien count? he has not yet had the surgery and I want to make sure he gets enough protien afterwards.thank you all for any advise,I really need it!

Hi Stephanie... I think that we have all asked this question once or twice on this journey. Remember what is first and foremost... LISTEN TO YOUR SURGEON! Your Dr. knows best, that's why he is paid the big bucks ! Every surgeon is different, but I assume that you will also see a nutritionist before and after the surgery? My Surgeon has me doing 2 8oz cups of skim milk with Carnation Instant Breakfast PLUS another 2 8 oz cups of skim milk. It is equal to 40 oz of protein, but for me being 2 months post op I should be consuming 50+ grams daily. Everyone chooses what works best for them as far as the protein goes, and some protein powders have 18-25 grams of protein per serving. There is also a liquid made by GNC that is 18 grams per serving... But the moral of the story is to always follow your surgeons rules! Best wishes to you and your husband! Jalonda

Hi Stephanie! I wondered about the protein thing myself! Thing is- his body will need protein to recover and heal after surgery. It also helps to give him energy, slow down digestion (leaving him feeling full longer), and helps to reduce the amount of hair he might lose post-op. That said, my nutritionist wants us to get in a minimum of 70 grams of protein daily. So long as he drinks his protein shakes and eats regular high protein meals, he should be able to reach this goal (although it seems impossible at first!). I have heard SO many different things on these boards, and nutritionists and dieticians all seem to have different opinions on what is appropriate. ASK his surgeon and/or get a second opinion from another nutritionist if you have any doubts. Hope that this helps! Yvonne PS: While I DO have energy, and have healed VERY well, I am still losing hair because I am not absorbing enough protein. As of last week, I am now back to drinking SIX protein shakes a day, plus the 9 small meals that the doctor wants me to have! Sooooo FULL...!
