dealing with medicare
I corresponded with a physician via e-mail and plan on making an appt. tomorrow. Today, however, I believe I made a mistake in contacting medicare. I just wanted to ask about coverage, but they wanted to know who I was and were taking notes and stuff. The woman I spoke to advised me that regardless of any serious health problems I may have as a result of morbid obesity, medicare would only treat those health problems and not cover wls. Did I make a huge mistake in contacting them myself?
Dear Susan,
First, take a deep breath and relax! I'm not sure if you made a mistake or not by contacting Medicare. What I DO know is that Medicare DID pick up some of the cost for my WLS. The only reason that they didn't pay for ALL of it, is that I have co-insurance through my husband, So Medicare is my secondary insurance carrier. If they turn you down for your surgery, be sure to appeal the decision since obesity is a disease just like many others that they do pay to treat. They may have simply been trying to scare you or dissuade you from your decision, or maybe they just cannot understand, I don't know (some people are naturally negative). Good Luck and let us know what happens. Take Care! Yvonne
