Hiya Pamela! Distal and Proximal have to do with how much of your bowel is bypassed. In most cases, your surgeon will determine which is best for you. Proximal Bypasses have more malabsorbsorption of caloric intake and nutrients than Distal Bypasses. You may lose weight slower if you are distal (due to less calories and nutrients being absorbed), than those who are proximal. Many doctors believe that it is healthier for you to lose weight a little slower and have less nutrient deficiency problems. You will still be able to successfully use either tool to help you to lose weight. For more info, Check out this website: http://www.drrossfox.com/pp/pp-gastricbypass.cfm
Good Luck and God Bless!
