NOW WHAT DO I DO???
I have an extremely intelligent 4 1/2 yr old daughter. She and I are always honest with eachother.
I told her that i was going to go to the hospital to have an operation and that she shouldnt worry because her favorite babysitter would be with her. (My most trustworthy friend) And her dad would be there too.
My problem now is that she is so scared. She is always telling me that i dont need the surgery because she thinks im beautiful and she loves me the way i am. She begged me not to do it.
I told her all of the things that i would be able to do with her when i lose the weight, but she doesnt want to hear it.
I think i may have made a mistake telling her the truth this time. I didnt want her to wonder where i was for 2-3 days. I am a stay at home mom and she would probably freak out.
Should I ask my surgeon to reassure her? He is a wonderful man, Im sure he would.
Any suggestions???? I know...I should have never told her. I put way too much pressure on her. Now i have guilt.
HELP!!!!
I too had this problem with my 6 year old son. It is heart-wrenching but a common fear with children. As some else on the board told me the easiest (and proven with my son) is to focus on the positives of the surgery. Tell her of all the wonderful things you will be able to do with her after your surgery. Like play....
Dress Up
Run and play in sand at the beach
Snuggle in your favorite chair without overflowing the arms of the chair
and any other favorite past times.
She will get through this, as will you and it is perfectly normal for her to be scared of Mommy being away for a few days. Stay strong and stick to your guns, love and understanding will prevail.
Best wishes
