My surgeon's office had me sign a contract saying if I gained even a single pound between the time I met & the day of surgery, I'd be cancelled. They don't want people bingeing before surgery, which makes the liver larger, and therefore the surgery is more dangerous. Claudia

Kate, It seems that surgeons really vary on this issue. When I asked my surgeon what I could do to help make the surgery go as well as possible, he recommended trying to lose some weight. In my case it was a recommendation and not a requirement. Mary

I would say it is up to your surgeon. I live in Fl and my doctor didn't require me to loose weight. I think it really depends on your doctor and you BMI. I have heard that some patients that are up in the 350-400 pds area are asked to loose weight especially if it is determined that thier liver is enlarged. So again, it depends on your doctor. Geri
