Sick leave

hey newyork, i will be having my surgery in three weeks and what i would like to know from the government employees, state imparticular if the accured sick time can be used vs family leave. thanks. michelle

Hi, Michelle: I don't know about the state rules for using benefit time, but I worked for the County government here, and we had to use our sick time before we could file for NYS disability. I would think that once your sick time is used, you would be eligible for disability through your employer. Your human resources person should be able to tell you or the person who does payroll should also know. Whoever handles the NYS Disability Insurance and Workers' Compensation should be able to give you the info also. Good Luck. Brenda

I agree with Brenda. Also, if you work in a clerical job, you will be amazed at how fast you can return to work. I was back to work within two weeks. I had open RNY. This was the easiest surgery ever to recuperate from. Good luck!
