PRE-OP APPT. AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO ASK
Caryn- You ask that surgeon any question you want. I would ask about his leak rate, mortality rate. What can you expect afterwards, restrictions ect. Also what will you look like after surgery in terms of incisions, drains ect. Hopelly Alice will answer because she usually has a list of like 75 questions to ask!!! Also I did not need much at the hospital. I used their gowns, made for easier access. I did wish I had my lip balm from the beginning, I made my hubby bring it the next day. I brought my toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, some socks, slippers, soap, deodorant, and a friend brought some magazines. The lady next to be brought petroleum jelly for inside her nostrils. The oxygen mask dries them out ALOT!!!!!! Good luck!!

Hi Caryn;
I will have my surgery on Dec. 1st and here is what I'm taking with me to the hospital, I hope it help you:
pajama bottoms (I hate my backside hanging out)
socks (I always have cold feet)
my cd player and some cd's that help relax me
chapstix, hygiene supplies (shampoo, soap,ect)
my phone list, and a book in case I feel like reading.
slippers and a bathrobe
As far as what to ask the doctor: I asked about post-op and what medications I would still be on and if there was a problem with any of them. Also if they needed to be crushed or could be taken whole.
I asked about his follow-up schedule and getting copies of all my labwork so I can keep track of my own levels.
I asked if there would be any tubes in after surgery (foleys, NG tubes, ect).
How long will I be in the hospital and how soon can I see my family after surgery.
What medications should I not take the morning of surgery and what type of diet should I be on the day before surgery.
These are just some of the questions I asked, Hope it helps. Good luck
