Hi Everyone- I posted this a few days ago and I didn't get any relies at all. I was really disappointed. Doesn't anyone have anything to say??!! ====================================================== Has anyone ever had a revision of their original RNY surgery? I have not lost any weight in over a month in spite of the fact that I have been eating right, working out and drinking my water. I gain and lose the same 3-4 pounds all the time. I don't get dumping no matter what I eat and I think my pouch is too big. I am nearly 6 months out. Has anyone heard of having a revision of the original surgery? I have a doctor's appointment on 11/11 and I intend to inquire about it. Thanks for any input. Maybe you've just hit a stale mate. Keep the water and excercise going and I'm sure your body will catch up. ...Ione _______________________________________________------------------------------------------------------ User ID: 172465 RE: Disappointed in only 1 reply Response from Amanda Davis at 6:44 AM PST on 11/02/2004 Jacksonville, NC - RNY (09/09/2004) well i am not a doc but i would say since ur almost 6 months or so and that ur wt is bobbin that ur on a plateau.... but thats just my idea.... hope this helps... Also, you might want to post later in the day. I know the board gets slow sometimes in the evening. With that said, I have not had a revision, only had my surgery done 09/07/04, but I wish you tons of luck with your doctor's appt. Have you kept a list of what you've eaten, along with the protein counts? Have you gotten in enough liquids? You might want to bring that with you to the appt. Good luck! Did you try the forums? I think there is one for revisions. Sometimes specific questions like yours get lost in the deluge of other questions on the board. Just keep trying. I'm also sorry I can't help you with your question. Although I do think 6 months out is a little early to think about a revision (and your doc may say so too). You may just be going through an extended (and painful) plateau. Have you lost 60 to 70% of your excess weight? That may be the cause of the plateau. Sometimes our bodies need a rest from the rapid weight loss. As long as you keep up your excellent work, the loss will eventually kick in again, although much slower than before. Good luck in whatever you do, Carole _______________________________________________------------------------------------------------------ User ID: 186658 RE: Disappointed in only 1 reply Response from Piizzadude at 6:56 AM PST on 11/02/2004 Harrisburg, PA - RNY (10/04/2004) SUe, You can ask about a revision, and maybe he made your pouch too big. THe more likely scenario is that you are on a plateau. Try changing up your habits eating at slightly different times, if you eat the same things, try changing what you eat. Change your exercise routine. It may take awhile but the plateau will break eventually. Up your protein, water, and exercise and Im sure the pounds will just melt off!! First, yes, it would be better to post later in the day...if its 6:41am where you are its 3:41am on the east coast. There are so many messages by the time we get on....yours is too far back to find....Sorry, but I just don't go back pages to find posts... You say over and over in your pasts posts that you are not getting in enough protein. And your nutrtionist tells you that. Ok. You know that part...so its time to do something about it. Count your protein...and use Fitday.com to keep track of your calories. If you can eat as much as you say...then you should be able to get your protein in every day in food. What are you eating so much of? Are you drinking with your meals and drinking diet sodas? If so, then don't. If not...then add more water...not juice...use Kool-Ade to help if you need to. I do. We can tell you over and over what you need to do, but until you buckle down, look at what you are really doing....then you will get no results. Unless you keep track of everything that goes into your tummy....you can't know FOR SURE how many calories you are taking in...or how much protein you are getting. And too few calories are as bad as too many. (except that you won't gain on too few...you just won't lose). As for the protein...consider this.....lack of it is the reason anorexic girls die. They don't eat....so they get no protein....so the body starts to burn up its muscle tissue...AND THE HEART IS A MUSCLE. Protein is needed for muscle maintenance...not weight loss. We lose weight by burning more calories than we take in....not because of the 60 grams of protein we take in. Protein malnutrition is dangerous and debilitating. You can get very sick from it. So listen to what your nutritionist is telling you. And take heed. You don't need a revision....you need grit and determination. Its difficult for all of us. And the farther out you get, the harder this is going to be. You think you can eat a lot now....wait till 2 years out. So you need a plan....you need rules....not my rules...but your own rules to live by. Only you know what causes you to gain weight (or not lose)...and only you can prevent it. I wrote my rules down and I posted them on my fridge. 1. No carbonation in any form. 2. Vitamins and protein every day without fail. 3. No drinking with before or after meals. 4. No fast food in any form at any time for any reason. I have others but you get the jist. I know what I need to do and struggle every day with it. And you need to do that too. We can't help you with this. No one can really. YOU have to make up your mind to do it....and we can advise, wheedle, beg, implore, cry, and plead, but we can't make you do it. You wanted a reply...well here you have it. What you do with it is up to you. If you get mad and think I'm flaming and shake it off....then its your loss and you will continue on as you are now. I only want you to succeed. And after reading your past posts....I see a trend...and I know how to fix it...but I can't. And as food for thought...what if you got a revision? What would you do 6 months down the road when you can eat more then? Another revision? Hell, I wish I could get a revision. But it ain't gonna happen. As with everyone else who has WLS we have 2 roads to choose from. Success or Failure. You either get with and stay with the program, or you don't. Its up to you. This is being sent with love...and peace. I truly want you to succeed. I have not had problems losing weight, but, found your response so inspiring that I have printed it out and will post that on my fridge! I just wanted to say thanks for helping me BEFORE I get to that point. Have an awesome day!!! But guess what.....you won't get to that point. Not if you keep a good mind set and stay motivated. I hate to sound vain...but my biggest motivator is a closet full of size 6/8 dresses, slacks and shorts...and lots of small blouses.... You'll do fine.... My thought was why is this gal crying about not losing weight for one month and wanting a revision? Has she not done any research at all. To me it is about the same as these people that come on every day and say, I haven't lost weight in one week am i done. So I think that probably a lot of people saw your post and stuck to the old saying, " if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all." Or they could have had the same thought that i posted to you, You are probably on a plateau and I think I also told you how to break it. Sometimes when people see that someone has already answered a post and they don't have another answer, they don't respond. _______________________________________________------------------------------------------------------ User ID: 149717 RE: Disappointed in only 1 reply Response from Susan S at 7:49 AM PST on 11/02/2004 North Central, AL - RNY (11/05/2003) I hit a plateau about 6 months out and posted about it. A long term post op suggested I eat a small baked potato for lunch, then go back to my reg high protein, low carb diet. Well, I did and it worked, don't ask me how. You might try it and see if it works for you. As for a revision, I would guess your surgeon would say it is too soon to consider further surgery. Most people do plateau several times in their journey. Keep up your hard work, I'm certain you will see the scales move again soon! Please listen, even though it is not the answer you were searching for. Revisions? Sure, some people have them because of a serious malfunction of their surgery. They're not all that common, but it does happen. The question is- do you have a malfunction because of what you describe? And the likely answer is, quite simply, no. I'd be willing to bet good money your Dr will say the same. Regarding dumping...some people never dump. That's just the way it goes. Dumping is not guaranteed, it's just a nice side bonus for some of us. It's normal to be able to eat a lot more at 6 months out. That's why we have the PROTEIN FIRST rule. If you fill your pouch with protein, you will get the staisfied feeling faster and stay satisfied longer. (notice I didn't say FULL. I don't believe you should eat until you are full, I believe you should eat until satisfied. Full, means you ate too much.) I'm sure if you write down everything you eat and drink, including quantities (measure!) and take it to your dietician, she/he can point out the areas you need inprovement in. Also, they can give you advice on alternate forms of exercise. If you're willing to do it and post it here, you'll get some good constructive advice as well. There is almost nothing that we here haven't tried to break a plateau and move on with our weight loss. Feel free to use our expertise. We're here to help. Best of luck to you, Lisa C _______________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------- User ID: 9951 RE: Disappointed in only 1 reply Response from Linda B at 9:52 AM PST on 11/02/2004 Pittsburgh, PA - RNY (08/09/2001) Hi Sue, A surgeon will only consider a revision if your surgery is not intact. This would include things like a staple line disruption, the stoma being made too big, or the pouch being made too big (although anything up to 8 to 10 oz is considered OK, so it has to be really big). You may want to bring a food diary with you to your appointment. This will help them evaluate your situation. Linda

Hi Sue, I had a revision done this past May. I had had a vertical banded surgery around 1984. I did not lose much weight so I decided to have the RNY surgery revision done. I have lost 73lbs since May and am continuing to lose. I would inquire for sure about your problem. Let me know how it goes. Good Luck, Pat

Sue I don't really know much about revisions so I can't help you there. But maybe you can call your surgeon and see what he says. But if your looking for a good surgeon mine was amazing Dr. Marc Bessler he is at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in manhattan. My recovery was amazing I was released from the hospital a day early and I feel great and I'm losing. From what I understand a lot of my surgeons paitents are botched up gastric bypasses so maybe he can help you the # for the center is (212) 305-4000 hope that helps take care.
