Some questions from a noob
Hi all,
I am just starting this journey but have been dealing with being overweight for a long, long time. I am going to a couple of information seminars but have my heart set in having Dr. Roslin do my surgery. I want a VSG. I also want to do it at Northern Westchester Hospital instead of Lenox Hill as I live in Westchester County.
Anyway, here are my questions and concerns and if anyone can help with feedback.answers I greatly appreciate it.
1. weight history goes back way more than 5 years BUT the last 5 years I actually did have success with losing 100 lbs (gained it back) Due to being at a semi normal weight in that time will that work against me?
2. Also in that 5 years I was pregnant. So I'm hoping that there is enough documented time being overweight for the insurance if that makes sense.
3. My insurance is Empire BCBS which I've heard is pretty good with WLS. Does anyone else have this? How quickly did they approve you and what did they require? My BMI right now is a little over 50 so that shouldn't be an issue.
4. How long did it take you to get to surgery from the time of the info session? I'm trying to do everything I can to expedite this as I am in a lot of pain due to weight related arthritis and edema of the legs. I don't know how much longer I can live like this!
I think that's it for now. I'm sure I will have more as I think of them. Thanks so much!

What a great gift you are giving yourself. I also believe it will be your current weight they go by. But remember, you will need to lose 10% before surgery as that's what most companies require. I don't think your pregnancy will factor either way, if you want to get pregnant again, you will need to wait 2 years but it makes for a healthier baby. I have NYS Employees Health Insurance, so I don't know about Empire plan, but most insurances do cover this. I went fast from info session to surgery, but I was very motivated. My seminar was Sep. 15, started diet on Oct. 10, surgery was Nov. 30th. I had a bmi of 40, and have gone from 260 to 212. I had rny gastric bypass, but do your research. The first week sucks, i'll be honest, but it does get better. Good luck and keep me posted.
Thanks for the replies!
My current weight will be NO isssue. So weird but a few years ago I was looking into the lap band and I "only" had like 80 lbs to lose. I remember wondering if they would let me do the surgery since my BMI was right at 35 and I had no comorbidities. Now with a BMI of 50, I feel like I have failed myself miserably. I don't even know who the person in the mirror is.
Susan, that was pretty quick, good to see that. I see so many stories where people wait 6,7 months to have surgery. I will go insane if I have to wait that long! I honestly have never been in this much pain in my life. My back and knees hurt so much all the time. The holidays killed me with food and I am ready to start losing some pre-op weight.
When I work up the nerve I will put a ticker up. I am off to a seminar tonight. I have to decide between 2 hospitals here in Westchester County. One seminar is tonight and the other is 1/5 so we'll see.
Thanks again!

Good luck on the journey. I am also going through the process and want Dr. Roslin. I am going to a weight loss support group at nwh on Thursday at 5:30pm. I have GHI and it looks like I will have to have my surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital due to them only covering Bariatric Centers of Excellence. I too would have preferred nwh. I will be doing everything else at nwh.
