Insurance approval for VSG

Hello All,
I posted this on the VSG board but I want to pose this question to the NYers.
Has anyone *****quested a VSG by Dr. Cussatti had any problems getting an insurance approval for the surgery? I have Oxford Freedom. Dr. Cussatti said that he has only done about a dozen or so of VSG's and none were approved thru the insurance. Im wondering if anyone else has had this experience and do you think it depends on the surgeon whether the approval is given or not?
Any feedback would be appreciated!

I had VSG done at the Cleveland Clinic.

I went a few rounds with the insurance company, but the surgeon provided the documentation during peer review to prove that it was medically necessary and the least risky surgery for my health condition.

It was approved.  I had Excellus Blue-Cross/Blue-Shield
