Would past health issues affect my future sugery approval??
i just would like to know if anyone has expierenced this that has done the lapband/banded gastric sugery...ok so here is my story..after 3years of failed attempts to succeed in weightloss (myself)..i now know i need the surgery because i cannot do it alone. im going to start going to my doctor. However i have been hospitalized before for severe depression in 2007.. although almost 2 years ago and i am way better no, no depression(isnt depression a co-morbidity?) at all but that i may get denied by the sugery doctor,..because dont they make you go to a psychologist to evaluate you and approve you for sugery? i have aetna....someone please help!

So, I am not an expert, but here's my take on it...
You DO have to go for a psych clearance, but you could go to any pysch doc, so you wouldn't really have to go to one who knows your whole history. Or, if your current doc knows you are so much better now, he might give you the clearance anyway. So, whichever you think would be a better choice, you can do.
As for the clearance itself, I think the point is to see if you are stable enough and ready for this surgery. They want to see if you have reasonable ideas of what you will need to do and of what will be the outcome, etc. This is a very intense surgery and lifestyle, and the changes can be very emotionally draining, so....it is neccessary to be a semi-stable person to begin with.
I just feel like you can pass the clearance by simply answering the questions they ask and by just sticking to the information that is pertinent to this surgery, not every single thing you've gone through in life. I mean, when I was a teenager, I had some depression issues--nothing too serious, but it was there--but I didn't really share that with the doc doing my clearance. Now, I know your situation might be a little more serious or in depth than that, but...I think if you take a deep breath and go to the doc--either the one who knows you're better or a completely new one who doesn't know you at all--you'd be able to answer the simple questions they ask and act positive about the situation and let them know you have family and friends who will help and support you in this(that's important) and I think you'll be fine. =)
Now, again...I'm not telling you to lie or anything...these clearances are in place for a reason...but, sometimes we need to do what we have to do... =) Know what I mean?
Well, I wish you the best of luck with this--I hope you'll be able to do the surgery(if that is what you want to do). I know this may be a scary thing since you have been through some things previously, but, try to take a breath and be optimistic...=)
If you'd like to talk or if you have any questions I could answer, let me know... =)
Hugs, Heather
