MD OH FOLKS COMING TO NYC - SUBWAY ?

Good morning!!!

Tomorrow, April 4, a group of about 10 MD members will be converging on NYC!!  I've been to your great city many times, but have only ridden the subway once, and then in an emergency situation, so I don't remember much about it except RUNNING to catch it in time!!!

The last leg of our trip will be through Times Square, and we need to catch our bus home near Penn Station.  I assume the easiest way for 10 people to travel from Times Square to Penn Station would be by subway, but not sure the best way to go about it.  I remember having to purchase a "card" before you could go through the turnstiles, but that's about it.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,

Teresa

depending on how much traversing NYC you will be doing they sell a day card for the subway.. you can also purchase per trip for the subway too... there are subway maps at every station and the subway lines are coded by color... so you can see what lines go to each station... so if the line you are at does not get you where you need to go you can look to see here the two lines cross.. take it to that station and then switch to the other line... sounds really confusing but its not really. most any store/ vendor that sells postcards sells pocket sized subwaymaps if you want to study it a little more than just at the station.. even regulars in NYC usually have a pocket subwaymap because there is just too much to know... when all else fails ask a police man... times square and penn station always have police and employees who can tell you wich way to go... you can probably even get the subway map off the internet too... takeing the subway place to place will save time and leave more time for sight seeing...  dont be scared.... anywhere you go someone can always direct you back to penn... and in a pinch you could always take 3 cabs. I LOVE NYC but only to visit. I dont remember whats on the menu and if its bariatric freindly but LIPS and LUCKY CHENS puts on a good show (Drag queen resturaunt) you have to make reservations but it is definatly a good time especially for those outside of ny LOL....mars 2112 is a martian resturaunt, jeckle and hydes is cool to... there are many theme resturants but i havent been in a while so i dont know how bariatric freindly they are. There is so much to see and do in the city! Hope you got some good stuff on your list!  i havent been into the city just to sight see in forever! Have fun. Dont be afraid to ask people how to get where you are going... not all NYers are that rude...:)

Thank you SO much!!!   Initially, I was thinking we'd just take cabs, which would be near impossible with a group of 10, so the subway will definitely be better.

I've been to NYC a lot as a tourist and found that the myths are SO untrue - the natives were quite friendly and willing to help - it was the OTHER tourists who were rude and pushy!!!  And I feel much safer in midtown Manhattan than in downtown Baltimore, and I'm a Baltimore native.

Since we have several NYC virgins in our group, this time at least, we're sticking with the midtown venue - Central Park (a carriage ride depending upon the weather), the Plaza Hotel, 5th Avenue, FAO Schwarz, Times Square, etc.

Our "big" meal is at Carmine's on W. 44th at 3:30 (when I called for reservations, it was either that or 10 p.m.!!!!!).  It'll probably be the first time in their history that a party of 10 only orders 2 family style entrees!!  LOL!!!

Thank you again for your help!

Hugs,

Tia

You won't be going far.  Times Square(42nd Street),  Penn Station(33rd/34th Street).

It is a walk or Subway stop.

The card is a "Metrocard" and can be purchased in the Subway and some stores.

Have a wonderful trip.

when you get on at time square you are gonna take the A one stop going downtown and visa versa if you are going from penn to time square you go one stop uptown.. if you miss it they are really frequent so dont worry there will be another on its way...

Thanks, Amanda!!!

Our trip was a great success!!!  Everyone had a blast and we ALL had huge wow moments being able to navigate the subway steps and turnstiles!!

We all agreed that pre-op, NONE of that would've been possible.

Thanks to everyone for their input!!!

Hugs,
