So Ive been researching and researching and I'm super confused on what WLS procedure to choose. RNY or DS. Im from upstate, ny. Albany Med, which is 50mins away only does the RNY. NYC does both, which is 2hrs away. Time isnt a big concern of mine. I contacted the surgeons in nyc to see if they accept my insurance, and if they do I'm deff going to go down and see what they have to offer as well. Do you think thats a good idea? To see what else is available to me? Any input would be appericated. Thanks!

If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never, give up!

I would see what the NYC guys have to say.  It will all end up to be totally up to you which one you choose, but if I were you, I would get as much information as possible to make the best educated decision for myself.  I have a RNY Dr 15min from me, but am waiting until the end of April to go to Dr. O'Malley's seminar, which is 1.5 hours from me.

I had 2 choices near me and I actually went for the 2nd choice.  I never wanted lapband so I went with RNY.  You have to do what works for you!  :-)

you should definatly check out the DS board.  I had my RNY in 2000, I have gained back 70lbs.  I went on to have the ROSE procedure which is a total failure, now I am looking into getting the band over my RNY.  I worry myself on the malabsortion issues with the DS but I read the post's and it seems that the DS'ers are all pleased with their decision.   I would have gone straight to the DS if it was an option back then.  Read up on everything....Talk to your surgeon...

Sounds like you are slowing the process down to make the most educated and informed decision for you.
Thre are different tools out there, none of them perfect, none of them wihtout risks.
Surgical preference as well as choice in surgeon are very individual. I say we are fortunate to have options. No best surgery IMHO only the best surgery for you! Any took can and has been defeated/failed even the DS, although less in my expereince meeting folks over the past 6 yrs. Is the risks of the DS worth the benefit? What tool do you need? how much excess wt do you have? what comorbidities? Are you after a DS able to followup for life? Are you a compliant patient as it is IMPERATIVE, think of those things a 2.5 hr trip could be a frequent ocassion for a year or so, if complications will you travel 2.5 hr emergently to see your surgeon? What type of postop eating can you manage? THe more normal size meals a DS affords or a more restricted one of the RNY? There are pros and cons to both. F/UP is imperative with both surgeries for health and success....Higher BMI the DS should certainly be considered IMHO...What will your insurance cover? Have you looked into that? Just things that come up. There is certainly nothing wrong with exploration of options! Yes get the good, bad and ugly from those who have been there and done that.

I was the same way as you.  After reading here and learning about the DS, I changed my mind.  I am now scheduled for my DS in May.  It made more sense for me and I am so excited :D  Good luck with  your research :)
