Hi...new here!  well not really...but finally making the decision to proceed with the surgery..Im approved by insurance for lap band and Dr Office is ready to schedule my surgery, but now considering bypass instead.  Just having a REAL hard time making the decision between the two.
Im going to the support group tonight, so hopefully that will help.
Hubby really does not want me to do this, so have that on my mind too.
Would love to hear how you all made your decisions...!  thanks so much.

I do not have advice on surgery type, since I had a different surgery than your two choices, but i just wanted to say congrats on getting approved!  Your hubby will come around eventually, just make sure he is as informed as you are and eventually he will be as excited as you are.  My hubby was wishy-washy before my surgery, but he loves the energy and confidence I have lately and has told me that he is proud of me...good luck with your choice!

Hi Kim,

How was the first Lap Band support meeting?  Were you one of the girls that came to the RNY meeting the week before?  I remember there were quite a few asking all kinds of questions.  I had my RNY surgery on the 16th with Dr. Carauna.  I just want you to know that whatever decision you make, it will be the right one for you.

I am also here to tell you that I made it through GREAT!!  and so can you.  I can't say enough about Dr. Carauna or the staff at Sister's Hospital.  I am not one to get chummy with my doctors and I don't think you really see Dr. Carauna much before surgery to do that.  BUT he was so sweet the morning of surgery and I had not a doubt or fear in my mind.  The surgery staff were all polite, kind and compassionate.  3 West where you will stay there is also great.

I had a smooth sail and maybe that helped my opinion, but I didn't have a single nurse or aid that I could say was not kind to me.  Even the girl who brought my delicious tray of clear broth was sweet enough to ask if I needed help with anything EVERY time she brought it.

I can't help you make your decision, but I would be happy to answer ANY question I can and maybe our paths will cross again at one of the support meetings.  Feel free to add me as a friend on here as well.

GOOD LUCK and let me know

Kathy

Hi Kathy.......no, I wasnt at the previous weeks meeting.  The LapBand Meeting was the first I attended.  It was helpful to actually be able to talk with people who have already had it done, and they gave me alot of reassurance.
Soooo now Im scheduled for 3/6..and doing the liver reduction diet as we speak!
I cant wait!!!

Kim:
Hello! Welcome.
What you are speaking to is so common! The preop choices and taking responsibility for that choice/outcome & the concern our friends and family have...

I am pro surgery, there are manyoptions and choices are good! (band, bypass, open/lap with a band or w/o,*fobi pouch, verticle sleeve, duodenal switch etc...)

With that said each of us is an individual and makes the surgery choice based on our research, understanding and acceptance of possible outcome and risks. We all are bias in some way based on our choice, our needs, etc...(*my disclaimer that I am bias as well!)

There was data out saying the band and bypass were the same, what that study neglected to report on was the lapband failures, when they were figured in bypass was 73% excess at 3 yr 7 months and lapband was 37%! (*American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery 25th Annual Meeting: Abstract PL-13. Presented June 18, 2008*)

Think about your eating style, what ool would help more? What are your expectations of outcome wt loss wise and comorbidity resolution wise? Are you willing to committ to the lifestylre of the tool (perhaps more f/up with band for adjustments), what risks are you willing to take? What does the surgeon say about the 2 for YOU?

People do well with both, and people have complications with both, lapbands may need revision to a bypass and bypasses sometimes need revisions too. Hard choices. I think when we know there is more peace and less anxiety, until then for me I keep reading, soul searching, Surgery can happen when we are ready and in the best spot for making that choice and f;up with the ooutcome of it! Hugs!
Thre is no best surgery imho just the best for you!

Hey I am a bypasser happy with it but I tellyou if I had choices and options 6 yr ago and more research time the BPD/DS would of been my choice! See many of us are never happy! LOL

Hi Jamie....
boy! you mentioned options that I have no clue what they even are !!
I made my decision to go with the Band, which will be done laprascopic.
Is it the right decision? Well Im putting my trust in God on this one..
Family will be at ease too with less invasive procedure..
I dont plan to be on cover of Sports Illustrated..but would love to be able to go to the beach - comfortably - so if i just loose 37%..well thats OK..
its 37% more than i have lost in the last 30 years of dieting.  73% does sound better though ;)
I am blessed with a husband who would love me even if I gained 37% right now.

I am scheduled for 3/6....and cant wait!
