Hi there,

My name is Sheryl and I am having lap band surgery on 2/24/09.  I would love to hear from banders and non-banders alike, as I am a-scared .  I am  also looking forward to this (hopefully LAST!) adventure in weight loss, as I am a "veteran" and have had enough!

Feel free to look at my story (sheryld59) and it's nice meeting everybody!

 Hey Sherry!

Welcome to the boards! I had Lap band almost a year agao and I have to say it was the best decision I ever made! I was pushing 400 when I started my pre-op diet and living that modified life at 22 years old that you talked about in your story.

Support is a great thing!!! There are a few support groups for you post op in Suffolk and one starting up in Nassau. I think people rotate between all of them as we try to keep them on separate days so people can get as much support as they need/want. If you would like to talk before your surgery I would love to talk to ya! I cant tell you about my experience with the band and answer any questions you may have.

The lap band forum is also amazing! Lots of great people on there!

Also, we have put together a long island meet and greet this coming Saturday. Feel free to join us! you can meet lots of great people who have had surgery and are all wonderful people and really motivating!

Check it out! We'd love to have you!

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for responding back to me!  My God, you are just a baby in your twenties...good for you for taking that step a year ago!

Can you tell me how life has changed for you?  How much have you lost?  How are those first two weeks going to be for me? EEK!!

 Hey Sherry,
thanks! It was big step but a crucial one since I was unable to get pregnant. So I need to drop the weight and kick my PCOS.

How my life has changed... Mostly... I have more energy. I have a better relationship with myself and with my husband. I can't eat as much as I used to. I love working out. I love going out again.. I dont have to make my own clothes anymore. I could go on and on.

I havent lost a lot of weight... I lost 50lbs. The band is not a miracle cure. its a tool. A tool that if i chose to use i do well if not then not. It doesnt cure my food addiction but it does help me curb it.. I have support groups for the addiction part and good supportive friends who i have made on OH who understand me and my struggles.

The first two weeks... well week one... you will be sore. you will be on liquid diet only and you might get frustrated being able to eat almost nothing. I encourage you to acknowledge those feelings because your eyes will still be bigger than ur tummy. week two you will be on either mushies or full liquids depending on ur doc. Again. it will take some getting used to... dont get to the gym right awayor do anything strenuous because ur port will be soreeeee and the pain sucks. not too bad but you still have to be careful.

I also encourage u to take pics and measurements youll want to keep track of all of these things.
good luck!
Rachel

 Hi Sheryl,

I'm also having lap band surgery on 2/24. Gulp. I am so nervous right now. In fact, I was just on my way out the door to stock up on clear liquids the 48-hour prior to and 48-post surgery diet.

I'm going to be at Cornell with Dr. Pomp. In what hospital are you having yours done?

Good luck!

For now,

Ruth
