Highland Hospital - O'Malley / Johnson patients
I had my appt with Dr O'Malley today. I got a May 13 surgery date. He does do lap-DS, but obviously still prefers the RNY. He told me that he performs the DS if patients ask for it but doesn't offer it as an option because he isn't convinced that it is more effective than the RNY. Once I said I was pretty firm in my desire for the DS he didn't bring it up again. I still like him a lot, very business-like, but I think that's a trait of many surgeons.
Mel, how did it go? I was terrified about a possible weight gain too, because I'm pms, but thank goodness the scales were kind. Hope you had good luck too.

Hey all you Rochester/Dr.O'Malley gals!
I'm new to OH, and am on track for WLS with Dr. O'Malley too. I've been to his seminar, and have my first nutritional consult next week. And I have all the other tests/appointments scheduled or completed already, so I feel like I'm moving right along! Dr. O'Malley didn't specifically mention the DS at the seminar, but it was listed in the booklet we received with all the handouts and checklists. I've been doing lots of research on all the options, and am very convinced that DS is the surgery for me! I'm so glad to hear Dr. O'Malley is doing these laprascopically now! I don't really care how many he's done, because I think he's a brillant surgeon and would do a great job with just about any surgery he performs. But, I am really wondering>>>>>> how are you all doing post surgery??? How was your experience with Dr. O'Malley? Any complications? How are you doing post op???? Please let me know! Sending good vibes your way!

Hey Laura - I am 6 weeks out and doing okay. I have lost almost 50 lbs. I am pretty tired out and having trouble with getting my fluids in, but that can be normal from what everyone on the DS board is telling me.
I am THRILLED that I found people here on OH that steered me in the direction of the DS because I truly can't imagine post op with RNY. When I went for my seminar with him, the DS was not openly offered. I had to go in and ask for it and then convince him I knew what I was getting myself into LOL.
Good luck with your journey. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. Are you in the Rochester area?

Hi Melissa - Glad to hear things are going well for you now. I found some of your other posts (I think?) and it sounded like you had a real struggle there for a while. I'm sure the pneumonia knocked you for a loop, and I'm sure being off the antidepressants didn't help either (I know if I miss mine more than two days I start weeping at the drop of a hat!) Nine days in a hospital is no small thing to recover from in and of itself, so take it easy, and don't be too hard on yourself! When do you start back to work?
Yes, I'm in the Rochester area - Fairport to be exact. (Diggin these storms we're having this afternoon!) I just moved here last summer from Tulsa, OK, so am a newbie to the Roc area. I'm single, and don't have much of a local support network yet, which is really the only thing that I'm worried about for the surgery. I think my mom will come stay with me for a while during and post-op, but she's not real thrilled about the whole WLS idea yet, so not sure how positive she'll be, emotionally. I'm seeing all my family the end of this month on vacation, and hope to do a hard sell to get them all on board!
Do you go to the support group at Highland? I'm planning on being there next Tuesday...
I work nights at the VA in Canandaigua, and am available days if you need any errands run or anything. Let me know!
Take care!
